Holy Smokes! Real North Carolina barbeque in Keene?!?
My wife and I were in Keene for a brewfest and decided to head into town for a bite. No real expectations, as Keene is a college town and sometimes that can mean college-town-food.
Before we even got into the busier section of town we saw the sign for Guerilla Grill and decided to pull in and check it out. The brick building itself doesn't give anything away, so it was a culinary mystery.
We were greeted by Zach (hope that's the spelling) who was going to be our bartender, and who just so happened to be part owner as well. He told us their story, from their NC roots to working in local kitchens, to catching fire in a food truck, to finally pulling the trigger and putting in the hard work of opening a restaurant. It was nice to hear the evolution, and his passion for doing things right was clear. Great chat.
He pointed out that we could order what amounted to a sampler. Smoked turkey, pulled pork, brisket, and ribs - and then surround it with house cooked sides; Mac and cheese, baked beans, slaw, and maybe the most ridiculously moist and delicious cornbread ever. We wanted to try the collards as well... but... limits, y' know?
And of course, one of the telltale signs of good barbeque is the choices of sauces. We had little cups of their house-created barbeque, the mustard-based-que, a mixture of both, their "comeback" sauce (aptly named) and a bonus experimental peach habanero sauce that was really great.
People... from there we just bounced around our food board. Mixing the different sauces with the meats and sides into all different combinations. Excitedly sharing when we thought we hit the jackpot combination (there were several). The meats were all incredible - I fell in deep love with the smoked turkey, my wife with the brisket. Truthfully, with respect to the rest of the menu, I don't know why I wouldn't just order this same meal every time since I don't think I got through all of the possible food/sauce/side combinations. Delicious and Fun. So cool.
In summary, charming story and service, ridiculous LEGIT barbeque, a great beer selection with a few surprises, and the prices were solidly low... I'd go as far as to say that this was one of the better values for the money that I can remember.
Just one word of...
Read moreVisiting from OH and looking to move to the area, we decided to stop here for a break in our drive around southwest NH - absolutely NOT disappointed!
We didn't catch their names but our waitress (blonde lady) greeted us and was super friendly and helpful with ordering. The dark hair man (assuming owner?) was behind the bar and helping other tables - these two were non stop taking orders, food running and cleaning tables. I was only able to catch 2 people in the kitchen area so definitely kudos to them because the food was HOT and cooked to absolute perfection 👌 The gentleman was super personable, telling us funny stories of things that recently happened there (order the surprise monkey shot if you are feeling extra adventurous!). My boyfriend and I each got a burger (LOVE that they are smashburgers with the option of single patty - medical issues restrict me from eating meat prepared any thicker so I RARELY get to order a burger out!) OH and be sure to get the comeback sauce for fry dipping!
Little bonus was that his mom was there grabbing a bite at the bar. Seeing her light up at hearing all the good things the customers had to say (without being prompted might I add!) about her son's hardwork and dedication was the cherry on top.
All in all, definitely stop by and support these people! Everything was 5 stars across the board. There's some genuine love in this place that makes an outsider...
Read moreMy wife and I love bbq and went in for the first time for our 30th anniversary dinner. The staff was fantastic. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, patient and helpful. We ordered the guerilla grub for two to get a sample of all their protein offerings plus the 4 sides. The portions were perfect for two people and the sides were excellent, cornbread was moist and flavorful, beans were very good, curly fries were great and seasoned perfectly, some places way over season curly fries, and the hush puppies were amazing, honestly a star attraction. For the proteins, the ribs and turkey were both fantastic and very moist and flavorful enough that you might want to forgo the tasty sauces on those. Unfortunately the pulled pork and brisket should never have been allowed to leave the kitchen and were extremely dry to the point of being hard. Now, I'm a fat guy who does not like to waste food, especially at the price of BBQ and I tried, but in the end I couldn't force myself to finish it. I doubt we would go back, going out is expensive now with the price of the meal and of course wanting to take care of your server for providing good service, as such, we get maybe one night out to dinner per month these days and can't really risk spending that much money on a chance at a...
