My first time here. I decided to order a combo so I could experience different things. It came with a hard corn chicken taco, a beef enchilada and a chile relleno. Also included Mexican rice and beans in which I opted for black beans (3 kinds available!).
1st came some chips and a green and red salsa for dipping. Tortilla chips were nice and crispy and not too salty. The red sauce was a flavorful and bright tomato but not a lot of other flavors. The green sauce was HOT! I couldn't tell you how it was - I'm a big wimp with spicy food.
The chicken taco was a bit disappointing. The chicken was not seasoned and so was bland.
The enchilada's beef was well cooked and although a tasty seasoning, it was not enough to stand out in the enchilada and it's sauce. Just needs a little more zing. But overall good.
The chile relleno was the best on the plate. Cooked perfectly with oozing cheese. But again, the cheese wasn't overly flavorful. Still good though.
Rice and beans were perfectly cooked.
Staff was super nice. Place was clean and busy. Prices can't be beat.
Overall I'd come here again for an inexpensive (and filling!) Mexican food craving. I'll bring my hubby to try some of the more spicy options and get...
Read moreI'm selfishly hesitant to convey the extent of my love for this little hidden gem but I also want to tell anyone who will listen. I have eaten at many, many Mexican restaurants from Tampa to Dunedin and El Maguey is my absolute go-to. Authentic "hole in the wall" yumminess at it's finest. I have taken friends there at different times over the years and it immediately becomes their go-to also.
The ladies are always so nice and the prices are low/average. The food never, ever disappoints. The chili rellenos are excellent. So are the fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, etc. Free tri-color tortilla chips with both mild red and perfect spicy green salsa is brought out as soon as we arrive. My only criticism would be that the place looks a little run-down but it's totally fine. Everything is clean and it is clear that they have put a lot of effort into making the space look as nice as possible. (I love walking through the mexican grocery 2 doors down as well.)
I hope they...
Read moreAtmosphere is not much. It's located in a small strip mall in Kenneth City on 66th St. Two TV's were playing the news in opposite corners of the room. The upside is that the service and food was very good. Cold beer and really tasty green and red salsa with warm chips was brought out quickly. I had the chile rellenos which were very good. They only offer ones with cheese, but I would love if they offered ones with ground beef or pork. Our dinners came with choices of rice and different beans and really good corn tortillas. I'm not sure if they are handmade in house or not, but the accompanying Mexican grocery store in the same mall had a large cooler full of them for sale. Be sure to check out the grocery store also! I'll definitely go back to try the Carne Asada that I kept seeing come out to...
