My wife is Burmese, born and raised in Myanmar, and we’ve both had the pleasure of eating in Myanmar several times and at Burmese restaurants in several countries, so we were excited to come discover this place. We were disappointed to find a restaurant in transition to a mainly non-Myanmar food! Until now, per the owner, only the outdated menus were available on Google Maps and the new owner said they could not get the new menus posted (?!?) so I posted them here. Mohinga, one of the national dishes of Myanmar, is on the current menu but was NOT available (!!!), accurate to say this is like McDonald’s not having hamburgers or a Vietnamese Pho restaurant not having Pho. However, after getting over our huge disappointment, the Indian goat curry was really great, nice sauce, had this been labelled as an Indian restaurant we would have been very happy. The Lahpet Thoke (Burmese tea leaf salad) was okay, not dissimilar to the version you might sometimes get in the countryside of Myanmar which is cheapened by heavy use of cabbage in ratio to the tea leaves. The owner here is very kind and gracefully requested suggestions on how to make the tea leaf salad. People here seemed to be enjoying the food and quick service, and we most certainly liked the Indian food here. It looks like a pretty okay mix of various Asian foods served my nice staff, but it is disappointing if you travel here seeking a Myanmar menu or food as it’s mainly very good Indian food. Maybe change the restaurant name to be more representative of the new menu and cooking? We also felt sad because Myanmar food is so delicious and special, and is not represented well here at all, less than 1/3 of the menu and number one item not available, etc. Will keep searching for good Myanmar restaurants in the USA which are few and far between, this one is not a good...
Read moreI stopped in for lunch yesterday and plan on returning for many more meals. For COVID's sake, the place is very clean, tables well spaced out, and staff extremely welcoming and masked. From the few people that stopped in and the conversations overheard, for take out and sit down, it sounds like they're getting repeat business. This is great...and speaks volumes to how good this place is.
I ordered the Shrimp Fresh Rolls and Myanmar Style Curry. The filling in the fresh rolls were crunchy and flavorful. The rolls could have been rolled tighter so the insides didn't fall into the dipping sauce, but if you've ever tried to do this at home, you know just how difficult it can be.
The Myanmar Curry (chicken) was so aromatic and the flavors fantastic. You could tell this was made to order and made with care. Instead of jarred minced garlic, there were non-uniform pieces of garlic in the curry, the right amount of fish sauce and the perfect amount of spice. I opted for the 3 level, on a recommendation from the server, but would definitely go spicier next time.
The chicken was the same used for the other dishes, (Thai Wings) bone in drummies, but feel boneless thigh meat would be more flavorful and compliment this dish better...but it's still great.
Overall, if I could say one negative thing about this place, is sushi offerings seem out of place. This isn't an Asian buffet, and thank goodness for that, but the menu reads like they are trying to appeal to everyone. Don't go down that road. There are excellent sushi restaurants in Grand Rapids and they have the proper decor for that experience...the decor in this place feels like I'm in an open storefront restaurant in Chang Mai...capitalize on this, or continue to perfect what's authentic to you, and you will have great success and a lot of repeat...
Read moreWe tried Amazing Myanmar Asian Cuisine today. The owners were super friendly and welcoming. I would first warn everyone that this is an authentic tasting place. Anyone looking for Americanized food that other restaurants serve would probably be disappointed. The deep fried spring rolls were tasty. The tea leaf salad was very interesting. I loved the flavor, but the mixture of crunchy and soft textures may be odd for some people. The mohinga noodle soup was very tasty, but a little on the fishy side so it's not for everyone. It reminds me of a Vietnamese noodle soup called bun rieu. The Myanmar coconut curry noodles were delicious. I think anyone who likes coconut curry would like that dish. The pad thai was a bit different than what you normally get at Thai restaurants in that it was not super flavorful. We got it for the kids so we made it not spicy, but I think it had potential to be really good with some added spice. My favorite dish was the steamed fish. The spicy lime sauce that it came in was to die for and the fish itself was so tender and delicious. This is another authentic style dish where you have to pick out the bones a bit so not recommended for children, but it was totally worth it. For dessert, we were given sweet sticky rice. It was really good and not overly sweet like at some other places. My only negative is the sushi. It's not that the sushi was bad, but it just wasn't anything special. I don't think it really blends in with their menu that well. I would love to come back and try more dishes. Overall, I'd give them 4/5 because of authenticity...
