There she stands on Roosevelt Boulevard, a white box of caffeine commerce under the hard Key West sun. Damn functional. Damn simple. The sort of place a man could respect for its honesty, if not for its corporate uniformity. No pretense here. Just coffee and people who need it badly.
The exterior is clean and bright as a fresh-pressed linen shirt, with those big bold STARBUCKS COFFEE letters shouting at you like an old friend who's had too much rum. The drive-through keeps a steady rhythm all day—a blessing for the cruise ship refugees and locals alike who can't be bothered to park and walk. It's good. It works. It moves.
Inside, the industrial ceiling doesn't hide what it is. The ducts and vents hang exposed like the guts of a mechanical bull after a rough night. But there's comfort too—those orange chairs soft as a bar girl's lies, wooden tables sturdy enough for a writer's elbow. The merchandise wall stands colorful as a Caribbean sunset, tumblers arranged like some corporate rainbow.
The baristas here are kind—too kind perhaps for this harsh world—but it's genuine enough. They remember regulars, which is more than you can say for most people in this transient town. They work with efficient movements behind the counter, like sailors who know their ship well.
The bathroom situation? Unlocked. Free. No purchase necessary. A rare mercy in a town where public facilities are scarcer than an honest politician. This small act of bathroom democracy earns them respect among the wanderers and the desperate alike.
What about the coffee? It's Starbucks coffee. Consistent. Reliable. Not the stuff of poetry, but it gets the job done. The pastry case offers the usual suspects—flaky, sweet things that pair well enough with caffeine when you need something in your stomach.
The place draws a mix of people: tourists consulting maps on phones, locals with laptops pretending to write the next great American novel, retirees killing time between doctor appointments. On the wall, vibrant artwork adds a splash of color, a nod to Key West's artistic heart without trying too hard.
In the morning, the drive-through line stretches long as a fisherman's tale, cars idling in the heat while occupants stare ahead with the vacant eyes of the uncaffeinated. By afternoon, the inside fills with people avoiding the brutal sun, nursing cold drinks and tapping on keyboards.
Is it special? No. Is it trying to be? Also no. And there's honesty in that. This Starbucks knows what it is—a reliable outpost of a global empire, offering the same drinks here as they do in Seattle or Shanghai. Yet somehow, the Key West sunshine and the staff's island ease seep in just enough to give it a hint of local flavor.
Not a bad place to read a book, though the old literary ghosts of the island would probably sneer and head for a bar instead. But for those of us without their livers or their publishing advances, it serves its purpose well enough. Clean, cool, caffeinated. Sometimes that's...
Read moreWith the holiday season right around the corner comes the arrival of the Starbucks holiday menu. With winter seasons tending to be more colder it was very interesting to see the release of a new Starbucks Refresher: the new Cran-Merry Refresher is described to be a combination of sweet orange, tart cranberry, warm spice, and delicious cranberry inclusions. Like the rest of the Starbucks Refreshers, you can get the Cran-Merry Refresher with a lemonade base, a coconut milk base, or a water base; the base you get does significantly change the taste of the drink. The drink I tried was the Cran-Merry Drink which comes with coconut milk base. Before I took a sip I noticed a similarity in smell and color to the popular Pink Drink which is a sweet strawberry drink that also contains coconut milk. After my first sip I was met with a sweet bitter taste in my mouth that tasted like a citrus type of fruit. I also noted a smooth and silky aftertaste which was most likely due to the coconut milk. The more I drank the Cran-Merry Refresher I noticed that I wanted to keep sipping on it unlike, previous Refreshers where I get bored with the flavor and can’t finish more than half the drink. I tasted the cranberry inclusions which for me were very sour and my face scrunched up like a baby eating something they do not like. With Starbucks drinks, you can customize them to get the perfect drink for you. If sour and tart are your style I would recommend trying the Cran-Merry Refresher with or without lemonade, and if you are not a sour person the Cran-Merry drink with coconut milk would be better for you. I would also recommend substituting the cranberry inclusions for the strawberry inclusions or strawberry puree. Another option to try is adding vanilla sweet or strawberry cold foam to compliment your drink. Overall, I am giving the Cran-Merry Refresher an eight out of 10. This drink is just what I need after an exhausting long run or wrestling practice in the Florida heat. Its sharp fruity flavor also helps keep me focused when I am trying to get through the mountains of homework I put off till the last minute. I feel the drink also represents the holiday season in Key West perfectly. It is a refreshing blend of citrus flavors that remind me of the tropics and can be perfect for how hot it can still get down in Key West even during the winter. So the next time you want a drink with a tangy twist make sure to stop by a...
Read moreSlept horribly on vacation in Key West, woke up really looking forward to getting a trenta and venti refresher all for myself. I asked for my usual order, refresher with light ice. “Light ice” is at the discretion of the barista, they do not have a measuring cup designated for this request. Corporate did add a $1 NO ICE fee and reasonably so… this location, both supervisors on duty that day, had zero problem handing me the Trenta with the amount of a venti AT THE WINDOW (see photo) and demanding a extra dollar if I wanted the size I ordered. I informed both supervisors that no other store does this and the manager in the picture informed me that this location is a corporate owned location (unlike the one up the street— GO THERE!) and that corporate allows the regional manager to change policies for his/her stores… none of this makes sense since franchises only succeed if they are consistent across the board. I was pretty irate because the options given were pay the $1 or they will THROW AWAY the drinks and refund me… again how does that make any sense? Why not make the customer happy instead of being wasteful over a policy unique to your location?? Again 2 supervisors, same responses so I believe they aren’t even making it up… they both said they would get into trouble for not following the regional managers infuriating diversion from regular customers expectations of their daily orders. I think anyone who has gotten to this point of the review can understand— do not mess with someone’s caffeine order in morning!! Also this location managed to not only upset me but the rest of the line behind me who had to wait for me to lose the battle and drive off feeling massively shafted… also pro tip courtesy of the manager in the pic— go to the franchisee owned location literally 3 doors down instead which is not under the jurisdiction of this supposed tyrannical regional manager thus she admitted the service would be different. I have written corporate already regarding this matter since I have no intention of allowing this “chain-wreck” to derail my...
