My goodness, where to start? Me and my wife stop in for some breakfest on route 66. We chose this diner specifically because of the reviews and breakfest menu options.
We walked in, diners usually have sit your own self seating arrangements. However, I guess this place has a please wait to be seated sign? We didnt see it. But the girl with piercings at the counter made that known with her nasty facial gestures and pitiful attitude towards not only us, but other customers.
I ordered a country fried steak with country potatoes, eggs and sourdough toast with a soft drink, my wife ordered French toast with hashbrowns.
My diet soda tasted like it was mixed with the whole fountain's syrups. I asked for a new one and it still tasted the same.
The server forgot my sourdough toast, I asked for them, she came back with the check!! Can you believe that! So while I'm finishing up some of my order, I start to dig into the country potatoes. Raw peppers AND Raw onions, overcooked potatoes.
My wife's food was subpar. The French toast was a little overdone but didn't stop my wife from loving it. Hashbrowns were very very bland. Dumped the rest of the low salt and pepper containers on the hasbrowns to improve the potatoes. Didn't work that well. Just nasty potatoes.
The hygiene and food handling practices this resteraunt practices is astonishing! Servers Stacking plates on top of fresh food, up and down the forearms, fingers being dipped into food just by handling too many plates. Then not washing the hands after wiping said food off of fingers. It's not busy at all in there, they can come back for plates. That's why it's so confusing. It's straight laziness.
The cooks were concerning too. No hair nets, facial hair, one dude was wearing his hat from home. No gloves, which I assure you is concerning here.
The actual diner is old. Decor outside looks like junk, we had to call to confirm they are even open. All the blinds were broken and shut, with the open sign off. The parking lot for this establishment is behind its building because the building is on the road. The booths are falling apart, apparently we couldn't sit up at the bar like we wanted to.
Overall, for my first time in a diner in a long while, this had to of been some of the worst food I have ever eaten. This place feels like it's given up. Like we weren't even welcomed, like it was someone's filthy home we were trying to eat in.
The server was nice just forgetful, the bar waitress was the rude one.
Definitely not what we were hoping for from the iconic...
Read moreWhen we got there it wasn't busy at all had a great greeting from Danny. Having never eaten here we took awhile to decide on food and a few more people showed up. Danny remained attentive and happy. After ordering there was a minor oops they were out of a sauce no big deal I modified my order. When the order was up there was another order very similar (I ordered chicken the other customer ordered pork chops) minor miscommunication I eneded up with pork chops he needed up with chicken I took a bite (was hungry not paying close attention) realized and pointed it out. Both servers were visibly upset at the mix up and wound up having to toss the mixed up food. Again it happens, for us it was no big deal Danny looked crestfallen he lost the spring in his step and looked like we had kicked his puppy. After profuse apologies (entirely unnecessary but appreciated) he comped both my wife and my dinners which was totally above and beyond. Afterwards we were trying to pay for our meal and Danny insisted it was comped refused to take payment and was shocked and tried to refuse when I tipped him. He deserved it he had given us great service despite a minor miscommunication it happens and we were in no way upset about it. I've had servers who have admittedly and purposely messed up orders and been uncaring or outright rude about it when the oops happens and I try not to be "that guy" unless it's warranted and they act like they really don't care. Then they've been rude when you leave a blatant "you did a bad job serving today" tip of a few cents but I've never had a server comp an entire meal and be so upset over an honest mistake and then try to refuse an honestly earned tip.
To wrap this up: Danny you did a great job your service was superb and I feel really bad you didn't let us pay for our meal (we do appreciate it though). On this experience alone we will be back to the manager/owner whomever reads this please give him a pat on the back and tell him to keep up the good work.
Also by the time we left the place was packed and the food was good....
Read moreI searched out restaurants for a Phoenix to Las Vegas trip and zeroed in on Rutherford's 66 Family Diner after browsing reviews for several places along historic Route 66. I had my cousin's kids with me for the trip and we were all happy with the food and the service. I got the Philly cheesesteak with added jalapeños and it was one of the best I've had anywhere! The bread was soft and squishy, the meat was tender and lean, the veggies and mushrooms were sautéed to perfection, and gooey melted provolone tied it all together. 10/10 would recommend the Philly, and 10/10 would recommend the added jalapeños if you want a little kick to it.
As for the kids meals, one kid got the kid's chicken tenders with fries. Looked a little skimpy to me with a standard amount of fries, but only two large chicken tenders. Turns out that I'm big and old, so there was actually way more food there than needed for a kid of 8 years old, and a some didn't get finished. The tenders and the fries got a rave review from the young customer!
The other older kid (age 11) got the Mickey Mouse pancakes. They sorta resembled the outline of Mickey, but no real details to sell the idea. Apparently though they were very delicious and got gobbled down! Also came with bacon and a sausage, as well as maple syrup and a huge cup of butter.
We were all happy with our meals, the staff, and the ambiance and plan to visit again on the next trip...
