As someone who takes great pride in thoughtfully recommending dining establishments, I regretfully must advise others to avoid Abridged Beer Company…not because of the food (which was, to be fair, outstanding), but because of the astonishingly poor treatment we received from staff and management.
During a recent visit, a friend of mine (who had consumed six drinks over the course of four and a half hours) was abruptly and unceremoniously cut off from ordering any more beverages. There was no unruly behavior, no signs of intoxication, and absolutely no reasonable explanation offered beyond the bartender’s vague and subjective judgment. When we calmly and clearly pointed out the timeline of his visit (even showing a timestamped message confirming his 5 p.m. arrival), the manager dismissed the evidence outright and refused to consider reviewing the security footage. Instead of seeking to understand or deescalate the situation, the manager defaulted to condescension and stonewalling.
We approached both the bartender and manager respectfully and with the intention of a civil discussion. In return, we were spoken to with blatant disrespect. I cannot overstate how frustrating it is to be met with smugness and indifference when trying to have a rational conversation, especially over something that could have easily been handled with a touch of empathy and professionalism.
Let me be clear: I understand the responsibility that comes with serving alcohol. But nothing about this situation indicated recklessness or intoxication. It felt personal and unwarranted, an abuse of discretion that, in my view, had more to do with power-tripping than safety.
This experience didn’t just sour an evening, it cast a shadow over an entire trip. I’ve never been in a group where someone was cut off from service, and I don’t associate with people who can’t handle themselves in public. What happened here was unwarranted, mishandled, and,in the context of hospitality…unforgivable.
There are far too many great breweries and restaurants in Knoxville to waste your time or money where hospitality is treated as optional. Abridged Beer Company might know how to craft a beer or plate a dish, but they’ve clearly forgotten the hospitality part of...
Read moreThis is one of our favorite spots in Knoxville, one of us is eating there at least once a week—if not twice.
Today, was a pretty not great day so we thought hitting our fav spot was a great way to turn that around.
Wrong.
This was the absolute worst bar experience I’ve had, not only here-but I’d say in Knoxville as a whole. I’m a bar sitter by nature, I guess from all my years behind one. With that being said, I’m not a difficult person to please. If anything I do my best to make your job easier because I’ve been there.
After seemingly avoiding even greeting us for quite a few minutes, the girl behind the bar (bc I would hardly call that a bartender) finally came & asked for our drink order. She was less than thrilled to be there, much less to pour a single shot of whiskey. 🙄 She never smiled, not once did she check on us or even come close enough in vicinity to ask for something if we needed it.
She was gone for a few minutes & the girl who delivered our food was like a breath of fresh air to the sucked dry energy of the bar. Finally after she stood with her hands in a sink 2 feet from us for a rather long time never even glancing our direction I asked if we could tab out & you would have thought I asked for a Togo box & a manager.
Needless to say; tonight’s service left much to be desired & did anything but brighten our day.
Just know; im not a reviewer. It was just bad enough to lead me here.
To say I’m highly disappointed is an...
Read moreWe visited Abridged Beer Company on Saturday night around 9:30 pm (they close at 10). We ordered right away, were polite and respectful, and expected to enjoy a quick visit. Unfortunately, the manager made the experience very unpleasant.
A little after 10, she brought us the bill without a “thank you” or any acknowledgment — just very cold and rude. When she returned with the change, still no thank you. Then, close to 10:30, she came back and told us the doors would be locked in five minutes and that we needed to leave. While we completely understand closing times, there are ways to communicate that kindly and professionally.
As paying customers, we felt rushed, unwelcome, and like we were a nuisance rather than guests. This type of attitude is not what you’d expect from someone in a management role.
I would not recommend going to Abridged after 9 pm on a Saturday unless you want to be hurried out and made to feel like you’re inconveniencing the staff. Need to add the bartenders were great and we have had good experiences other times. This female manager with dark hair was...
