B. Doughnut La Plata — Restaurant in La Plata

I often take my morning ride to King George for business, but on the way back to Charles County, my wife and I crave B-Donuts every time. I've been a regular at this place since it opened. The owner is nice, and the donuts are amazing. He used to explain the process of making such fantastic donuts, which includes coming in very early—around 3 a.m.—to prepare them fresh daily. I can honestly say I’m usually happy to get my freshly made donuts…until I’m not.

My wife and I ordered our usual favorites along with a few for the kids, but the donuts were stale. If anyone reading this review has ever bitten into a stale donut, you know how off-putting it can be. The half-dozen donuts we received were stale, which made me remember the owner’s commitment to making them fresh daily. It seemed like these donuts had been sitting somewhere for some time.

I brought this issue to the attention of B-Donut, and they wanted to make it right by offering us some fresh donuts, as Kelsey, the general manager, had assured me. The next day, I returned to the store after my usual run, but the young woman behind the counter was hostile, rude, annoyed, and combative. I felt her negative energy as soon as I mentioned I was there for fresh donuts because the batch from the previous day was stale. I had already spoken with Kelsey, and upon hearing this, the woman yelled that the donuts were not stale, as if my mouth was lying to me. Her aggressive demeanor felt inappropriate, especially with other customers present.

I lost my patience and the situation became unruly because she seemed delusional, almost as if she thought she owned the place. I was shocked by this treatment, considering I was sent there by the general manager. I was on the phone with my wife at the time to choose replacement flavors, and she told me we couldn't get the cinnamon roll because the employee either didn’t want to or couldn’t include it in our replacement. To make things worse, the employee had colorful hair but was covered in hair all over her shirt.

I left without any donuts because I didn’t want to deal with her unpleasant attitude. Additionally, I don’t live in La Plata. Kelsey had emailed me saying we could choose any donuts, but ultimately, we just wanted replacements for the stale ones. I should have gone to a grocery store if I wanted bad customer service along with bad donuts.

In the end, Kelsey did make things right by replacing the donuts, but when I returned to pick them up, a guy assisted me while the employee couldn’t even look at me. So, let me ask you, small business owner—how am I supposed to return to your store if your employee behaves rudely and doesn’t offer an apology? The answer is...

I have to EDIT my review to indicate the Owner clearly cares a great deal about Customer Service and the Customer’s experience. The owner refunded me, even though I never asked, extremely rare!! So overall this Local Small Business gets 5+ Stars for Attitude, Commitment, Service...and certainly Creativity. **Thank you for the refund. While unnecessary I certainly appreciate what it indicated about you. Absolutely my 9 year old neighbor LOVES you I’ll bring her soon, and you can make me eat my words ; ) I have no doubt our next visit will be far improved and we look forward to it! Thank you! Original Review: I give the Service 4 stars! But was disappointed with the actual product. The bagel style bacon/cream cheese IS beautiful and exceptionally creative. Presently, the bacon is decorative (as are the chives a secondary option). Unfortunately I couldn’t eat it. Inedibly salty and too much cream cheese (unlike the Boston Cream filling, far too little). Perhaps folding bacon bits (or chives) into the cream cheese?? Then it becomes worthy of “bacon” in it’s name (my husband’s idea). The Boston Cream, the yeast donut overcooked. I had trouble biting through the bottom which was a dark gold brown and the dough dry. They glaze was a great flavor, true choc not overly sweet, but poorly tempered wasn’t creamy and fell off in dry chunks. The Cream Anglaise bland and NOT enough?? Cream Anglaise should be pale and creamy full of flavor from yolks and real vanilla bean. The heart behind B Donuts is clearly bright, creative, quirky (said as a compliment) and hopeful. Everything from their cafe, decor and food design is intended to welcome you and start a conversation. Respectfully, I think B Donuts should master the basic techniques required for their designs until they are second nature! Consistency is the hallmark of a stellar business. The Vegan Coconut elegant simplicity! The dough perfectly cooked light and airy. Long tendrils of soft, sweet coconut affixed with a perfectly sweetened and portioned glaze; a study in culinary balance. This is what every design needs to live up too. Unfortunately even tho these are proably the best dounughts in the area I have to give them one star for incovince and service. so I went here for the first time two days ago because I wanted to try the lemon curd dounughts specifically travled just for these to be informed they Where not on the menu but not there fault as menu changes so I should have called first which lead to to the website which said you can call 24 hours ahead to place specific orders so that’s what I did called spoke on the phone and placed a order for 12 dounughts to picked up today 4 lemon curd 4 cinnamon sugar and 4 glazed they assured me it could be done and It would be rdy @ 8 I got there around 8:45 expecting my order to be complete when I get there they told me they just didn’t make the lemon curd dounughts…the whole reason I came back was because I specifically wanted to try and placed for the lemon curd dounughts they could have at least called me back and let me know it coundlt be done instead of having my drive 30 mins all the way down to laplat and not have my order.. nobody tried to accommodate or say even acknowledge the fact that I was told they could do something that they didn’t I don’t know if I’ll be back agian didn’t seem like they cared to much didn’t offer a discount free coffe extra donut anything so food five stars customer service and experience 0…best bet just call and make sure they have wait you want don’t waste your time placing...
