This bakery has the potential to be amazing, but I've found it to be pretty inconsistent, both in terms of food and customer service. I've tried many things there. Their breakfast foods and sandwiches are hit and miss for me. Some are ok, some are just super greasy. All are very pricey for what you get. I meet friends at the District often and I now usually bring food from somewhere else instead of getting it at BR. Also - the thing a bakery should be known for - their cakes - are terrible here. Their cupcakes especially (both regular and GF) are DRY as bones and their buttercream is tasteless- it's like you're literally just eating whipped butter with no sugar...bone dry cake and greasy icing...eww. I've bought cupcakes and cakes several times now hoping maybe I just had a bad batch, but it seems to be the pattern. Their iced cookies look cute, but taste bland. Their GF biscotti is awesome, weirdly enough. Their scones, cinnamon buns, and specialty desserts (things like lemon bars, desserts with mousses, layers, etc) are all really awesome also - that's where their strengths primarily seem to be. Their pies are okay too, but nothing particularly special or different about them than any other pies, and they're expensive. And their customer service is super slow every time I've been in. Not normal slow... ridiculous slow. Unfortunately, for the price you pay, I would never buy/order a cake or cupcakes from them in the future. Which is such a shame because their presentation/decoration ability is beautiful and it's locally owned, which is the type of business I prefer to support. But the food just isn't that great to eat overall. It's really annoying to spend $5-6 on a cupcake or $50+ on a small cake only to get home and find it crumbles like sand upon cutting it bc it is so dry and the icing tastes like butter so no one wants to eat it and you just have to throw it all away... what a waste of money and disappointment in a much-anticipated dessert! King Soopers cakes are both better than theirs and more affordable. Maybe I've simply had bad batches at BR, but if so, then that's not consistent enough for a bakery either. I used to work in a bakery that had incredibly moist, flavorful products, and was 100% consistent. They had it so dialed in. It's not that hard. I've really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and multiple chances through several transactions, but it's not really yielded anything better. Sorry Button Rock. I really wanted to give you a better review, and I don't want you to fail, but you've got to raise your cake/icing/sandwich...
Read moreStopped to pick up donuts to take to the office in Boulder. That was a bust, as this bakery is not the type that sells donuts. Thought about going with pastries instead, but there wouldn't have been enough in the case to bring to my department of 30. And the pastries are all in the $4-5 range. Fine for breakfast for one or two people, but not very realistic for a group. (Donuts for 30 at another bakery for $20, or pastries here for $120? Easy call.) Ordered myself a cinnamon roll and a coffee so as not to leave empty-handed. The cinnamon roll tasted fine, sort of a Cinnabon copycat recipe that was good but not exceptional enough to warrant the high price. Coffee was warm, not hot. I had to serve my own coffee out of an air-pot, which felt sort of gas-stationy to me, but the flavor was good. Nice atmosphere, but I got the overall impression that they don't get a lot of morning business, so they charge extremely high prices to compensate. Not a fan of that business model. The sole employee on the premises offered to sell me a box of day-old pastries for $6 (regular) or $8 (gluten-free). However, this was in an opaque box that was taped shut. She would not open it to let me see what I would be buying. (I guess it's a "surprise box." No thanks, I don't like surprises when spending my money. I assume that if they want your money before they let you see what you purchased, there's a reason, and so this was a hard pass.) I was very pleased to see that they have gluten-free offerings. I might come back sometime with my daughter (who has Celiac) to try these, as the other reviews speak favorably about these items. I was also pleased that they take AmEx, as this is very important to me. The shopping center is really tricky to navigate, and when exiting, you can only go east on Arapahoe. I had to backtrack a mile and turn around to go west. (I'm not factoring this into their score, as it's beyond their control, but wanted to give people a heads-up that exiting may be an inconvenience if you're headed toward Boulder instead of Erie.) Their cakes in the case looked absolutely stunning. I would suggest that they market themselves as a cake shop and not a bakery. If I had been shopping for a wedding cake or a fancy birthday cake, this would have been a great find. But from a bakery standpoint, this was a very disappointing experience. Not bad enough that I would want my money back (adequate cinnamon roll, nearly adequate coffee), but not really good enough to make me want to come...
Read moreI read through most of the reviews before trying this place out and thought oh maybe it's just a fluke with the service. We went in on Tuesday to get a birthday cake for my wife's birthday on Sunday. Upon entering we weren't greeted at all, there was one girl helping another woman pay her bill, one girl just standing there with what looked like a pick up order. No joke, she held the order and stood behind the counter the entire time just waiting, not even offering to help the one pleasant girl who helped us out. Way too busy for one girl working the front with 10 people waiting. You could tell she was overwhelmed but she still had a smile on her face. We placed the order to get picked up on Sunday. The girl helped us order the cake wrote everything down and said someone would help us check out. Unaacounced to us, someone came from the back and placed a cake at the counter for us and said here it is. Didnt even show us what it looked like. My wife and I were really confused considering we wanted it for 5 days later. We mentioned it to the woman and she said she'll just put it in the fridge for us and have it chill until Sunday and clarified it would hold up okay for the pick up date. I understand preparing food early but for a cake to come out ready to go in less than 5 minutes is kinda off. I understand maybe two days in advance but it was obvious the cake was already premade just needed the writing on the cake. I noticed the box had my wife's name written on it which is spelled LIBBY. So I thought hey at least the name will be correct. We'll we get to dinner and my wife was all excited for the cake and upon opening the box ready to put it on the cake tower we saw that it said HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIVEY??? I literally thought it was a prank. Honestly we all make mistakes and I understand that, but for them to mess up the birthday girls name on a cake that costed $50.00 is unacceptable. I wouldn't have cared if they messed up the whole Happy Birthday part, just not the NAME. The cake tasted fine, everyone enjoyed it, I'm just disappointed with the lack of service and attention to detail. We're going to give it a second try, hopefully this was just another fluke. We're hoping next time will be...
