Hollywood Deli — Restaurant in Lake View Township

I cannot believe that I have lived on Sheridan Road for well over a decade and just discovered this bodega and deli. I have serious issues with carbohydrates, I mean really really bad...but I have succumbed. The subs and sandwiches are outstanding because H.D. uses bread from Turano and that's the gold standard in Chicago, the best Italian restaurants in Chicago use Turano bread exclusively. The deli meats and cheeses are always fresh the quality never varies. I almost forgot about to mention the La Scala Italian beef which is of course a Chicago staple. Now onto the bodega portion of the store, I mean where else could you find a large can of hearts of palm, artichoke bottoms, and extra heavy cream in one small store? Seriously, where? Abdullah, the manager, was the first fellow I met he always makes his customers feel appreciated and wanted as does the entire staff all of which cannot do enough to make their customers happy. When you enter, this corner store may just seem like your typical neighborhood stop for snacks or any items you may have forgotten from your trip to the grocery store. What you see when you go to the back is a full on deli, carrying a wide variety of deli meats, cheeses and toppings. I came with a friend wanting to get a quick italian beef. We came on a Wednesday night and quickly were able to order. The man behind the counter was friendly and made our sandwiches swiftly. I was impressed to see they cut all their meats and cheeses on demand, ensuring freshness. First thing I noticed was how loaded the sandwich was. The price is generous for how much beef and peppers they give you. They also soak half the loaf to ensure the meat juices flavor covers the bread. The meat was tender, and the giardiniera is what you’d expect to get. The bread was soft but kept the mountain of meat inside nicely. It was delicious. I got a turkey sandwich from this place and I was blown away! There was a long line to get your sandwich... And it was worth every minute of the wait!! They crisscrossed generously mayo and mustard on both sides of the bread. They sliced all their meat and cheese right fresh for each order. They were generous with their toppings. I was blown away by how good it was. The guys working behind the counter were kind and so efficient. The guy that rang me up was so sweet. I was shocked it was under $10!
