Eh. Average, at best. But that's not really good enough in Chicago.
I bought a Reuben. I was expecting toasted rye bread. It was regular bread. Bleh. I don't remember any Swiss cheese on it. I don't recall any sauerkraut, either. Just some odd, Thousand Island-ish dressing. I didn't recognize the meat brand, and I've lived in Chicago all my life. I could probably easily tell you if it's Vienna, Boar's Head or whatever, blindfolded.
Sorta reminds me of the time I bought a "Chicago" hot dog out of state and it was nothing like home. I wanted to show them how to do it correctly...
Reubens is toasted rye bread (actually expected a rye bagel, considering Bagels are their thing...?), buttered (use a GREAT, flavorful butter, like Kerrygold) sauerkraut, mustard (slightly spicy, but no booze, people are highly allergic to alcohol) and Swiss cheese. Bread must have seeds, even though they're a pain to clean up. (Points for that here)
Should have some sort of fresh ground spices (Spice house is right there at North and Wells), maybe garden dill, smoke salt and some sort of depth of flavor spice, like a garlic/celery salt. I'd add fresh romaine or head lettuce. Maybe some light type of barbecue/meat spice to bring out flavors w/o relying on cheap salt (over sea/smoke salt)
I didn't notice any signs bragging about the brands used, which here is kind of a not-great sign. There was a place on Webster @ Sheffield where I asked "What kind of hot dogs?" And shamefully, they didn't know. Ooh, not good...they were gone in 6 months.
Regular bread made the sandwich kinda soggy...There was more than enough food, but it was average.
If you're going to make a "sloppy" sandwich, please use top-quality bread. Aldi brand, for example, can't do the job. Breadsmith can, and it better, for 8 bucks a loaf. So can Rosen's brand. I don't want to get a mess in my (fairly) new (3 years old; new to me) car.
More than enough meat, just maybe too much meat and not enough depth of flavor dimensions...
I liked the pickles. I liked the chips, nice n crunchy, and not obnoxiously salty. I bought a Columbe cold coffee. It wasn't quite what I've had before. It was ok, just not refreshing, like the Starbuck's bottled coffee or 7-11 brand.
Price was ok. Not hideously overpriced. Which I expected, knowing that area very well.
I thought the mixed, young pretty girl did a good job. She was friendly and polite. I thought she must be someone's daughter as she was speaking some language I didn't recognize. Armenian, I thought it might have been...? The older man handed me something and I thanked him and he said nothing, which is very bizarre to me.
I bought plantains, they look like banana chips, but they're not. Actually very good.
I didn't like seeing what looked like real food lying out, exposed, up on the wall on shelves by the ceiling. I just thought "Ew." I don't ever even leave food out at my own house. NEVER, EVER. Why? Well, obvious reasons. It attracts bugs and rodents.
Even the tomatoes and peaches are in SEALED containers for that reason. (Tomatoes get weird in the fridge. Unless cut. Local peaches also like to be out if you'll eat them soon.)
In sealed cases, maybe or obviously fake food would be different. I didn't like seeing food out like that, tho. I know it's hard enough to keep things out of restaurants that shouldn't be there. Why bring problems?
Also thought the corned beef was too thick. I like pretty much shaved. This is how you get the best flavor out of meat.
Chicago has a ton of great food. Every time should be omg. I mean, average works, but u could go to McD for that.
It's always been a hard area to park, as I'm highly allergic to paying for parking, also. I didn't notice a ramp if you had a wheelchair (my dad does, so, odd I didn't notice) . I'd just call and order over the phone, in that case. If there's a baseball game, I'd avoid the area if I could. I hate going there when it's crowded.
I might eat it again if I were hungry and happened to be there, but I wouldn't go out of my...

Read moreBEST bagels, delicious juices! I've ordered delivery many times from TONY (Turkey Bacon Egg N Cheese on an everything bagel with crunchy veggie fixins and the Revive juice YUM). They serve consistently delicious, authentically NY sandwiches (I lived there for a while)! And they follow directions!! I asked for Lite on the turkey bacon, and viola! it was done.
But yesterday I went in to pickup my TBEnC and Revive and not only did I pick up some nourishment for my body, but also for my SOUL, as when I walked in, I'm pretty sure I heard the person behind the counter say "great hair, by the way." I said thank you and neglected to give that same compliment back because they also had REALLY GREAT HAIR. I knew I was about to be deliciously satisfied by that sandwich, but I didn't know I was going to walk out of TONY and immediately feel full of good vibes. Thank you, TONY associate, for the lovely compliment and shining smile.
Of course, I am also a cool and kind customer, which really helps, y'all. You should try it. ;-)
Thank you, TONY! See...
