Whew!!!! I got a lot to say about this phenomenal, little Scandinavian eatery that is now hands down my favorite breakfast spot in the Windy City. It’s got it all - home-cooked meals, friendly service and amazing value! I’m honestly shocked I haven’t heard more about this gem! It impressed my husband and I so much we actually ate here two mornings in a row. Yeah, back to back, same trip. It’s THAT good.
On the first morning we began our meal with a fresh cup of joe ($3.00). We decided to share the Monte Cristo Breakfast (two pieces of homemade French toast topped with a slice of ham and scrambled eggs with Swiss cheese, served with a side of important lingonberries, $14.45). If the description doesn’t make it obvious, this dish is huge. And to add more, it comes with TWO sides, ours being two cinnamon rolls and hash browns. It was SO. MUCH. FOOD. And not only that, but it was so much GOOD food. They hit the mark on both quantity and quality.
Everything blended so well together. This was by far the best version of this famous dish I have ever had. The ham was so perfect, I love it when it’s prepared just right. The egg was super moist and all the way cooked, and there was a very appropriate amount of cheese. The toast is 100% housemade, oh God it was delicious. I could have eaten it by itself.
Day two my husband went full on treat yo’self and ordered the French Toast Fantasy (mascarpone-filled cinnamon rolls battered, grilled and topped with granola and seasonal fresh berries, $12.95). Rachel Ray’s fave! And no wonder - it’s a sugary mess (in a good way). Holy cow this dish can and will satisfy your sweet tooth. Honestly I found it a little overwhelming. It was like sugar, on fat with sugar, and a side of sugar. It was still good but we were only able to stomach a few bites. I think it’s a unique dish, and it’s good but you’ve got to balance it out with something bland, like eggs or plain hash browns. I went simple and just ordered 2 Eggs, Hashbrowns and Seasonal Fresh Fruit ($10.75) and husband ate half of my dish just trying to give himself a break from all the sweetness.
Both days, the real winner of the meals were the cinnamon rolls. You won’t find any like these elsewhere, and you’ll remember them for the rest of your life. Moist, stretchy dough but not tough at all, the absolute perfect amount of cinnamon and the most delicious icing ever! I will remember these forever!!! It’s as close to heaven on Earth as you can get!! They are extraordinary, mind-blowing. I don’t believe there are words in the English language that will try describe how in-love I am and how big of an impression these rolls made on me. You’ll just have to try them...

Read moreMy late breakfast last week was the ultimate "Vision of Bliss" and self indulgence. All these years I've never bothered to write ✍ a review so now I'm taking the time to applaud the attentive staff who knew I was in a hurry before my work day and sped service up at a warp speed (whoosh)!
Last week I treated myself to a huge breakfast Right before a full day of ceremonies I ended up taking half home 🏡 with me it was so decadent.
And I was in a time crunch but I needed this; I need to spoil myself rotten so I can give generously to my clients. Also I didn't want anyone hearing my belly rumble with hunger pangs so I paid a visit to Ann Sather's as a tribute to happy childhood memories and nostalgia.
Meet the Swedish smorgasbord...
Delicious homemade cinammon rolls with sweet glaze, but not overly sweet! The sampler breakfast platter is definitely a must if you want a bit of everything and it comes with thin Swedish pancakes with lingonberry jam, a Swedish meatball with gravy, eggs 🥚 a Swedish sausage, homestyle potatoes 🥔 and I had a tomato 🍅 juice since it's always been a fave of mine as a kid.
I used to come here as a child with my parents and haven't been here for a whole because typically I'm not a "breakfast person"; but this was so satisfying.
The wait staff treated me like a princess and brought everything out to me within minutes right after I sat myself at a tiny table booth.
The staff works extremely well together. You want something...you just wave your hand. No one is too busy to get you something. You are made to feel special from start to finish and they will even box 📦 up your meal for you themselves if you need to take it on the go. Now most restaurants make you box up your own meal to go but here it's old school...they do it for you.
The best description for Ann Sather is comfort food and the presentation was beautiful. The quality has been consistent after all these years 👏 and I will definitely return for another breakfast but this time hopefully when I'm not in...
