Reviewing its immediate predecessor Afghan Saray--highly suspicious that every review was glowing, 5 stars. (Bots? Owners)? Anyway, it was counter-service-only, with printed menu not posted above the counter. As it was Afghani, I assumed it was Muslim so that even BYOB was not an option. Shockingly, when I asked for water as my beverage, they brought me a bottle of store-brand "purified drinking water" for which they charged $1.50--no straws, cups, ice, etc. I asked for a cup of tap water, and they replied they didn't have cups, glasses or ice. If 12 oz. wasn't enough water, no refills--would have had to pay another $1.50. Dishes were okay, but very bland and nothing out of the ordinary for Middle Eastern food. Quite rice-centric (and the amounts of meat & veg were way too small for those watching carbs). Hard to eat without making a mess--only plastic sporks, no knives. I suppose it was acceptable for take-out. At least the mint tea was decent.
All I can say after looking at the Yummy Tummy soft-open menu is that the only thing that's changed is the focus on burgers. Meh. Do we really need another fast-food place, especially overpriced, albeit sit-down? (And is it still counter-ordering-only)? I will wait to see what actual human customers--not bots, not people connected to the restaurant's owners/managers--have to say before I try its incarnation as Yummy Tummy (stupid name, BTW) and perhaps...
Read moreI generally don’t like giving low stars but this unfortunately merits it.
The high rating feels artificially inflated because it’s kept Afghan Saray’s old reviews and because some of these accounts feel suspiciously linked to Yummy Tummy’s current management… I mean, how can so many accounts have just one review calling this the best burger in Chicago?
That said, my partner and I gave this place a shot some time ago and it was a pretty bad burger. It’s evident that these ingredients are very much from the frozen section of Costco and not hand prepared. There’s no problem with that, but, for the high price, I’d much prefer spending my money at a neighboring restaurant with fresh ingredients.
Service was fine, but we didn’t receive the royal treatment like these glowing reviews would suggest.
At the end of the day, this is a pass for me. Save your money for one of Edgewater’s many other dining establishments. I’m certain the food will...
Read moreWe tried Yummy Tummy for the first time, and it was a mixed experience. The staff was friendly, and the food was “ok,” but the restaurant just felt like it needed a bit of work.
Honestly, the French fries were the highlight of the food for me, as they were well-seasoned and very crispy. The burger was just “ok,” as it was made fresh, but completely well done. There were not any descriptions to depict what the various dipping sauces were. Also, the beverages machine did not label the drinks, so I had no idea what I was drinking. There also was not any ice for the drinks.
Every table had a box of plastic gloves, and I am unsure what these are for. Perhaps for eating messy burgers?
Overall, I think this place has potential, but for almost $17, the burger meal is way too pricey for the...
