Believe the reviewers complaining about the food, the prices, the portion sizes, and the overall demeanor of the staff...
My being from New York didn't influence my review in any way (I've been in California since the late 1960s) however, the name Brooklyn deli did draw me to Lancaster to give it a try. While hankering for a good pastrami sandwich, a good friend and I discovered a sub joint I'd frequented since the 1980s was out of business (sad to see). We googled for a deli and came across Brooklyn deli. We decided to drive over from Palmdale and try it out.
The place (in appearance) did sort of come off as a quaint deli but upon entering, during the height of the "lunch rush" the only customers in the entire joint was one couple seated at a tiny table in a corner and they didn't seem overly thrilled with their food. When we first walked in the woman behind the counter looked at us as though we'd just walked into a private business meeting in our underwear - like we were the wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Apparently she was correct. $10 for 4 ounces of pastrami and just enough mustard to create a yellow film on the inside of the bread, along with a single so-so-ish kosher dill pickle dropped in a Styrofoam container. That's it. With a to - go order the sandwiches weren't even wrapped. We ordered one corned beef sandwich, one pastrami sandwich, a tiny side of potato salad, and an extra pickle. The order totaled $26. I wish I could see the puzzled look on my own face looking at the tip jar on the counter. Both sandwiches had the same miniscule amount of meat. The pastrami was poorly cured and flavorless, the corned beef lacked moisture and was also flavorless, and the potato salad, while somewhat bland, did have a decent texture.
When we got home with our order I added extra mustard, mayonnaise, shredded lettuce and sliced tomato which at least put some life into a couple of otherwise dismal sandwiches making them feel at least an inch or two closer to the price we paid.
To sum it up: No friendly greeting, no sense of urgency, completely aloof - acting as though they'd rather be sleeping, the staff came off as completely disinterested. The food was bad, the portions were small, and the pricing is completely unjustifiable except that you end up paying for the customers who aren't there. I now see why there was only one couple in the place during the height of the lunch hour (around 12:30) on a Wednesday. I seldom write reviews about anything and in fairness I waited a week to write this one only out of a sense of duty to people like myself who simply want a decent value for their money.
On the upside: The location is great, the décor is perfect for the location, there is sidewalk seating, and tons of foot traffic. With the right management and staffing this place could be a gold mine. Unfortunately, we won't...
Read moreMy husband and I have mixed reviews. We both ordered different things and had different feelings about it. I enjoyed my roast beef sandwich although quite basic but my husband got the brisket dip and said it was extremely plain and the dip was flavorless. We both enjoyed our sides though, I had the potato salad and my husband had the pasta salad. The space was nice and clean and the man working the counter was great and very friendly. We wish they had music playing though as the silence made every little noise the focus and the environment less comfortable. Also prices were quite high for what was offered. For my meal (sandwich, small cup of potato salad and a fountain drink was roughly $15). However if the prices were better I would...
Read moreI ordered the pastrami on rye.
The portioning of food is not becoming of a "New York" deli. Specially for the price. Hell price the sandwich what ever you want but the slices of bread should not be touching on the edges like it did at this place. Meat should be falling out uncontrollably. If the sandwich is too easy to eat, then it's not worth eating.
The pickles were dried out. The kettle chip were pretty tasty though.
Btw I've gone to some of the best delis in the US: canters here in LA and Katz in NY. I know what i'm talking about. If your looking for a good deli in the AV area I would recommend Best of Europe in quartz hill,...
