My group of 20 was in town for the MIPA spring conference and chose this restaurant because of it’s large variety of food options. We called a week before to make the reservation and placed our food and drink orders ahead of time. They had told us prior that they would give up our table 15 minutes after the reservation time (11am), but it was especially strange when they called at 11:08am to say that they were about to give up our table even though half of our party had already been there for 15 minutes.
After that, the food came out immediately which was expected as we had pre-ordered. It was decent, but everything was overpriced for the quality. We have had our fair share of bad restaurants from bringing our group to the area in the past years and while this wasn’t our worst experience, it was definitely memorable. Our waitress, Tori, would mutter curse words and phrases under her breath right next to us about how ‘us teens’ were a f** inconvenience to her amongst other things. She also told us we were drinking water instead of asking otherwise. We had one boy who wanted a milkshake which she told him wouldn’t be possible without a 20 minute wait because ‘the kitchen is backed up’. He said he had no problem waiting. When I walked back to the bathroom, I saw the blender still covered in melted ice cream and chocolate from whenever someone else had ordered one. It was seriously disgusting. Still, he waited 40 minutes, but she never came back after dropping off the bill.
We also had some problems with the bill as she had put it all on one tab (which we handled decently and efficiently), but the prices were completely different then what we were told. There were random things added to some peoples orders that were not supposed to be there. There was also a gratuity charge added to everyone’s bill that we were never informed of. As a party of 20, it is definitely understandable, but a heads up would have been nice for the kids who just brought money for what they thought they would be paying for. In the end, we ended up spending an extra ten dollars covering random charges; the last thing we wanted to do was complain and get yelled at. Overall, it was a very disrespectful experience; teenagers are paying...
Read moreWe recently stopped by Weston’s Kewpee Sandwich Shop in downtown Lansing as a family of three—two adults and our kid—for the first time, and while it took a bit to get our bearings, the food made it well worth the visit. As a historic spot that’s been slinging burgers since 1923, it has that classic, no-frills vibe. But as newcomers, we felt a little lost when we walked in; no one greeted us or explained the ordering process (which seems to be counter-style). Luckily, a kind regular noticed our confusion and gave us the lowdown, even recommending the King Oliver Olive Burger as a must-try. Shoutout to that stranger for saving the day! We ordered a solid spread to share: the King Oliver Olive Burger with fries, Parmesan chips, tomato soup, and a grilled cheese for the kid; plus the BBQ burger special and onion rings for the rest of us. The wait for our food was longer than I’d expected—maybe 20-25 minutes on a weekday lunch rush—but everything arrived hot and fresh. Now, onto the stars of the show: the food. That King Oliver Olive Burger? Phenomenal. The patty is ground in-house, and it’s topped with their famous olive sauce—a creamy, tangy mix of mayo, green olives, and just the right kick that had us all hooked. It’s not your standard burger topping, but it elevates the whole thing to something addictive and unique to Michigan spots like this. I usually go for medium-rare, but burgers here come well-done by default with no customization option, so keep that in mind if you’re picky about doneness. Still, it was juicy enough not to dry out. The BBQ burger special was smoky and flavorful, a nice contrast to the olive one, and those onion rings? Crispy outside, tender inside—total crowd-pleaser (the kid couldn’t get enough). The fries were solid (crinkle-cut, perfectly salted), and the Parmesan chips added a cheesy, garlicky crunch that we devoured. But the real surprise was the tomato soup and grilled cheese combo: the soup tasted straight-up homemade, rich and packed with fresh tomato flavor, not that watery canned stuff. Paired with the buttery grilled cheese, it felt like ultimate comfort food—perfect for a...
Read moreSo I thought this was a great mom and pop burger joint, which looks like they might have revamped it not too long ago. They have neat trinkets, pictures, and quotes all around the restaurant. The only downside is that it can get pretty crammed on the inside. The seats, however, were very spacious for booths and take that from a big guy. They get slammed pretty hard during lunch, so anything before 11:30 AM and after 1:30 PM if you want to avoid a line. Now on to my food...
This place has been around for 100+ years, but I don't believe they've lasted this long because of the food. I can tell this town adores this place since they have so many regulars and they are treated with royalty/respect. They are definitely winning over people with their customer service. Even with a line about to hit the door, the cashier never let up, and I got everything I ordered. I ordered a Double Patty Burger with American Cheese and Mushrooms on a Pretzel Bun. I can tell this place holds great potential. However, the young cooks in the back aren't doing this place justice. My bun was cold, and the assembly of a burger is most crucial - was a letdown. Burger was lopsided and just not flavorful. The onions rings might be the best I ever had in my life. There was a crunch to every bite, and they...
