Strange Matter Downtown — Restaurant in Lansing

Coffee and drinks are always great here. I love their options for homemade syrups which tend to taste much better than the artificial pump syrups.

This time, I was grabbing lunch so I ordered food from Bangos, located inside Strange Matter. I got the chicken avocado wrap & Nasty AF potatoes. The chicken avocado wrap had little or no seasoning which would be fine, if the sauce wasn’t mayo. Pretty bland. The nasty AF potatoes were a pretty large serving and could’ve been a meal themselves, which I appreciated considering they were $6-7. It was cheesy but everything was so stuck together it was impossible to get a normal sized bite with a plastic fork. I wish they’d be cut a little smaller. Good flavor but all the seasoning would be in one bite & the potatoes were mostly soft instead of crispy which I would’ve preferred for this dish.

Overall, would order the potatoes again if I was planning to eat them with a fork and knife but probably will not order the wrap again unless I am out of other options.

I’ve been a long time regular at downtown and have nothing but high praises for it. The baristas consistently improve my mood with their friendly demeanor and witty jokes! Liv, Zac, Jac, & the rest of the baristas always treat me like one of their own and always make me feel welcome. I look forward to getting food and coffee from here almost every very day I can afford to. The shop’s atmosphere matches the aesthetic of downtown to a t and I’m happy that this is the premier craft coffee spot in the area. Despite the greater Lansing area being hostile to LGBT people, it’s nice to have a little sanctuary where we all feel safe. I love the cortados and dirty chais that I get. Academic studies claim that 3rd spaces are dying and strange matter is a large exception to that notion. From a study spot that isn’t my apartment to a place to meet friends and family, strange matter consistently fills a need in my life for a reliable 3rd space. I come here regularly. Mostly for bangos. They have seasonal latte right now that I do enjoy. I will say the person that works the register regularly (Eli) is extremely unfriendly. Never a thank you. Never have a great day. Always bland and very few words. I work at a restaurant and I go out of my way to say thank you, greet people kindly, and before they leave or after their transaction tell them to have a great day! It’s super simple. Manners and kindness go a long way. It makes customers want to come back. The other employees seem to be very friendly and bangos is inside so I have no choice but to go here if I want Bangos. If they didn’t have those couple of things I literally would not go here because of the very unfriendly, borderline rude cashier.
