Okay, a breakfast place, check. Dine while sitting in egg-shaped chairs, check. You've got donuts too? Oh, triple-check!
My wife sun and I had breakfast here...we're all vegetarians and my wife is gluten-free, and they were able to provide food for all of us. I started with coffee as that is what any self-respecting breakfast eater does. I'm heard to report it was pretty good. I've been burned (figuratively) so many times by the browned waters served at some diners that I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get good coffee you can actually taste at a new place. Well done Sun's Out Bun's Out!
I had the Soft Scramble...served on what felt like an upscale hamburger bun, with caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and I passed on the aioli as I'm personally, conceptually against anything that is mayonnaise-like. This was not bad. Maybe lacking in flavor a little bit (my fault for removing the aioli) but the cheese didn't have much of a presence. It didn't help that they got both my son's and my order wrong and had to redo them. The soft scrambled eggs themselves were good.
My gluten-free wife had their Avocado Toast...they don't actually have any gluten-free bread options which always makes her feel like a second-class citizen...and many previous reviews have stated that they weren't willing to do any modifications...Well perhaps they read those reviews, as they were willing to do the Avocado "toast" on greens for her and she like it quite a bit.
Now, donuts too?? Yes, donuts too. They are delivered every morning and when they run out, they run out. We discovered these on our second morning when we wanted to take a box home and there wasn't much of a selection left. The first visit though had plenty to choose from and I had a vanilla glazed yeast donut which was generous in size and taste (and made the coffee taste even better.) Bonus that the donuts and drinks are available for purchase at a separate counter/cash register so you don't have to wait in the longer food line (which wasn't really that long) if you just want donuts and coffee.
Bonus - visit the rotating sun-glasses-wearing egg mascot in the front of the store to view his fanny made of egg yolks! Truly living the dream...
Read moreNot actually open until 4am. Went by just after 9pm and they were already closed. Apparently they are closed from 1pm - 10pm every day.
Update: Finally got to try the food. Tried 5 different sammies, plus fries and juice, and they were all meh to bad. All but one thing went into the trash. Only thing I could finish was the avocado toast which was ok but sorely needed lemon/acid. Marriott has better avo toast.
Avocado toast - I've had better, though admittedly I never had worse either. Avo toast rules (even though it's $2 worth of food for $10-20). Oddly they cut the toast into thirds but slap a whole egg on top of all 3 slices. How are you supposed to eat this? I ended up eating the egg separately from the rest of the toast, defeating the purpose of having an egg on top.
The cheeseburger, the bacon egg and cheese, the sausage egg and cheese, and supposedly "soft" scramble were all overcooked and dry, especially the brioche buns. Could not choke down even a bite and had to spit them all out.
The poutine was as salty as the Dead Sea. Could only take a few bites of fry and cheese. The short rib was so dry and flavorless it was like eating a shredded napkin.
The fresh squeezed orange juice was made from sad, unripe oranges and was so sour and pale at least I could tell it was really fresh squeezed.
I also don't like that certain dishes are only available during certain hours but there is nothing on the signage to let you know when they are and aren't available. The menu just up and changes, making it impossible to plan ahead.
The mascot is funny and cute, even if the placement of the 3 yolks...
Read moreFirst thing that came to mind was: this reminds me of Eggslut. The menu is very similar, especially the coddled egg in the glass jar. The sandwiches are very similar too, right down to the cage free eggs and brioche buns. It made me wonder if it was run by the same owners, but this time dressed up in cutesy, egg forward decor.
The sandwiches are a bit on the small side. All the eggs are cooked runny, unless otherwise specified. Since these are hand foods, and not eaten with utensils, it would be good to have napkins on hand for when the yolk starts dripping down. You can tell the eggs are pretty good quality from the bright orange yolk that drips down.
$10.25 Bacon Egg & Cheese - applewood smoked bacon, cage free egg, cheddar cheese, chipotle ketchup, brioche bun: Good egg sandwich with a lot of bacon, although that made it a bit too salty. I didn't care for the chipotle ketchup, because it was actually more sweet than spicy, and a bit too sweet. Brioche buns are great as always.
$12.25 Cheeseburger - beef patty, cage free egg, cheddar cheese, caramelized onion, bread & butter pickle, chipotle ketchup, brioche bun: There is emphasis on the cage free eggs, but no descriptor for the other animal parts, just plain old beef patty. Pretty good burger, though the chipotle ketchup is a bit too sweet, especially since caramelized onions are sweet enough.
They're open early and stay open late, so it's great for a quick breakfast or late night snack after a long night...
