Wow what happened to Silver Pond? Our faithful group of 11 celebrated the Year of the Tiger last night Saturday, January 29, 2022 there.
Upon arrival for our 8:00 PM reservation our table was surprisingly ready. A once packed restaurant was mostly empty. The waiter promptly informed me that the kitchen closes at 9:30 PM. OK we have plenty of time for the cooks to prepare our extensive dinner.
It’s an elaborate affair with creative guest favors, place cards, a preselected printed multi-course menu, wines from cellars and a gourmet homemade dessert. We go all out and order APPETIZERS: BBQ Ribs, Chicken Wings, Special Seafood Roll, Magic Fried Shrimp Balls; SOUP: Minced Chicken Corn Soup; THIRD COURSE: Peking Duck; ENTREES: Beef with Eggplant, Salt & Pepper Shrimp, Phoenix Nest Seafood, Fresh Scallops in Oyster Sauce; RICE & NOODLES: Roast Pork Fried Rice, Beef with Black Bean Sauce Chow Fun; VEGETABLES: Snow Pea Tips, Baby Bok Choy, Fried Stuffed Bean Curd.
Well the evening and food wasn’t completely disappointing, but there were many blips. The empty restaurant should have been a foreboding. To start the decor has been diminished to paper table cloths (yes really) and paper napkins when at one time it was all cloth. Paper tablecloths are a novel way to cut expenses. But it doesn’t end there.
To start the special seafood rolls were basically fried mush. The dipping duck sauce was completely watered down with no sweetness at all. Everyone enjoyed the ribs which were $22.95 for an order of eight ribs. Two orders were served. The magic shrimp balls, $6.50 for three balls, are a nice presentation of a shrimp paste surrounded by crispy fried rice noodles, but the shrimp paste filling was not well liked. Four plates of shrimp balls were ordered for our crowd.
Menu prices have increased. Following the appetizers the second course was the minced chicken corn soup which was sent back and removed from the bill because it tasted like dishwater. The third course, Peking duck, $65.00, was cold and flavorless.
No other major complaints about the food. Most items were adequate and some better than others. The beef with black bean sauce chow fun was up to par, $16.95, but the pork fried rice, $12.95, was bland. The salt and pepper shrimp, $18.95, was a yummy fried dish and the scallops with oyster sauce, $23.95, were presented with lots of broccoli. The Phoenix nest seafood, $24.95, comes in a shredded taro fried bowl filled with squid, shrimp, scallops and garnished generously with Chinese brocolli. Silver Pond offers a nice variety of Chinese vegetables, baby bok choy, $15.95 and snow pea tips, $19.95 and always a treat to have.
Cutting costs and raising prices while trying to recover from COVID shortfalls will not fill up a restaurant with customers. Unfortunately next year we will not be returning and will probably go back to an old favorite down the road, Hong...
Read moreI used to come here when I was in elementary school. Nothing has changed. Great food, fast service, and decently priced. We ordered the following:
Beef satay Beef with Chinese broccoli Salt tasted jumbo shrimp Peking pork Half peking crispy duck Fresh tilapia steamed with ginger and scallions Lobster salt and pepper Lobster ginger and scallions Chicken fried rice Snow pea tips garlic Fish maw and crab meat soup
I'm not sure if I got it all but here goes nothing.
To start, hot tea. Loose leaves. Great for each meal.
Beef satay, good. Nice tender beef and lots of green bell peppers. It was good but not favorite. 3/5
Beef with Chinese broccoli, chunks of beef. The Chinese broccoli still had a bite to it. Great mild flavor, perfect with rice. 4/5
Salt toasted jumbo shrimp is delicious. Head on with shell is the way to go. Perfect amount of saltiness and has a bit of heat from the jalepenos. 4/5
Peking pork is like a general tso chicken but with pork chops and a bit more tanginess. I wish it was more crispy but good flavor. 4/5
Peking duck is good too. Not too much of an odor. You get a hoison sauce paired with it. Crispy and moist at the same time. Duck is nicely cooked. Missing bao buns or something like that. 4/5
Steamed tilapia was steamed perfectly. Sauce went well with white rice or any rice. Great flavor. Not too salty. The meat was flakey and you know it's fresh from the flavors. 4/5
Lobster salt and pepper was good. Fried nicely. Good amount of salt And pepper. Juicy and not dry
Lobster ginger and scallions was my favorite from the two. So flavorful 5/5
Chicken fried rice was good. Any typical Chinese restaurant will have this. 4/5
Snow pea tips garlic was cooked nicely. Had a good bite. Good flavor. Enough garlic 4/5
Fish maw with crab is my favorite soup. Brings back memories so it might be a nolstagic thing. Huge portion because we had a party of 11 and we still had leftovers.
Staff is friendly and service is quick. Clean plates and silverware. They provide everything you need and get unused plates out of the way for your comfort. The tables have the center piece that spins. Makes it easily accessible to...
Read moreI had been to Silver Pond several times with a friend and he is there once a week, at least. I went on Christmas Day with an elderly relative. We were looking forward to a nice quiet meal. Needless to say, it was far from that. to begin with, when we sat down, within literally 10 secs the waiter wanted our order. He was very impatient. He had to come back since we had no idea what we wanted. Once we ordered the food came out he never came back to see if it was ok. By the way the food came out 10 minutes apart from each others. You cannot be polite with food getting cold on your plate. I asked for brown sauce which was in my food already-I just wanted a small side of it and a different waiter who I had to flag down said they didn't have any. WHAT? I ordered a nest with chicken and beef and veggies. tons of salty chicken and meat- a bunch of scallions, 4 little bits of carrots and two mushrooms- and the nest was not fried enough. REALLY? The fish (flounder) tasted like perfume. It was nearly impossible to complain or ask for something else. The waiters were highly stressed and moved around like they were being hunted. We understood that it was crowded but customer service and the food should still be priority. I do not like being rushed. I will not return there for dinner and not sure about dinner. I guess its all about the money for the few restaurants open on Christmas Day. One more thing, my chair was situated where waiters ran by---the chair got hit constantly-no place to move to and the people waiting were behind me. They didn't prepare for people waiting in drives. Chairs should have been placed outside. It was way to loud. Also do not expect egg drop or wonton soup or egg rolls on the...
