The cupboards were bare, but Mother Hubbard was getting hungry. We decided that we needed an adventure so went exploring Yelp's list of cheap dinners. We found this Vietnamese restaurant on the list and decided to give it a try. It's a cute little place, located in a small strip shopping area. When we walked in, there were only 3 Americans in the place, the rest were Asian. We always consider that to be a good sign when looking for Asian cuisine. As soon as we were seated, the waitress popped up with menus and a basket of some very interesting rice crackers. I couldn't tell you the exact flavor, but they were very good. They had a hint of soy and maybe sort of a shrimp overtone. We checked out the menu and everything sounded interesting. Seeing our confusion, a very nice gentleman, who appeared to be the owner, came over and chatted with us. Not just about the menu, but just a nice little chat. We asked him for recommendations and he made them. I had one of the pho dishes - a savory noodle soup with meat and veggies. He told me the first one was the most popular because it had several different meats in it. Here is where it gets fuzzy. I recognized the beef and pork. They were not as lean as I prefer, but I generally shave every molecule of fat off my meats. There were some other meats in there and I have absolutely no concept of what they were. Generally, I draw the line at unknown things in my soup, but this was an adventure and one mustn't wimp out when adventuring. Whatever they were, they were all good. I seasoned the broth with some chili oil to add a bit of heat, then added some of the mint, bean sprouts, etc., that came on the side. The broth was very flavorful and satisfying. Under the meats was a layer of rice noodles. The serving size was huge and I couldn't finish it. I also tried my daughter's vermicelli dish with grilled steak and shrimp. It was absolutely yummy and I'll probably have it the next time we go. She was also ecstatic to find boba smoothies so close to home and ordered a cup of the mango to go. It was one of the best bobas I've had. All in all, we'll be looking forward to going back to this warm place full of friendly,...
Read moreI had heard positive things about the Noodle House Vietnamese Restaurant in Lauderdale Lakes so I went there for lunch one day. I'm sorry to report that it was a huge letdown. Being the lunch "rush," I expected the place to be busy and crowded; it was neither. Along with myself, there were only two couples eating there.
The first issue I had was with the service. It took a while for someone to provide me with a menu and a glass of water. Again, note that the restaurant was nearly empty. I observed one of the employees taking a menu and attempt to head towards my table. Oddly, he was abruptly stopped by the other employee I could see whom I will assume was the manager since he was handling the register and seemed to be supervising the other employee. Eventually, the "manager" brought me a menu and a glass of water. I looked through the menu and decided on getting their special, top notch pho.
To say the least the pho I was served was underwhelming. Please note that I am Vietnamese and have had pho in many different places from my mother's kitchen to Boston's Chinatown to other places in South Florida. The broth was clearly not prepared as it should have been - slowly made using beef bones, certain spices (like star anise), etc. The broth tasted exactly like what one would get from a can. Next the rice noodles were not the wide kind that I am quite used to when having pho and they were thin and overcooked (mushy). The beef slices were not thinly sliced and like the noodles overdone - no sign of the normal pinkish hue. The pho was supposed to include tendon, tripe, meatball, etc. It had none of these. The pho couldn't be defined as the Northern-style or the Southern style - odd. It was literally the worst pho I've ever had.
I thought about complaining but I simply did not have the time to stay nor did I want to make the effort. I paid my check and simply left. Maybe everyone in the restaurant was having a bad day or something. All I know is I'm not taking another chance with Noodle House...
Read moreWhen you first walk into this place, the staff seems pretty friendly and approachable. My dad and I got seated rather quickly and the server brings you some tasty shrimp crackers for free to munch on. After we got our menus, it took around ten to fifteen minutes for someone to come and offer us drinks and take our order. Not a huge deal. I am patient.
To begin with, I just want to say that I eat Vietnamese food all the time and I used to frequent Saigon City Vietnamese before they closed down. I also have a lot of Vietnamese friends who make me authentic Pho when I go over their house. Quite honestly, I was craving a rich, succulent pho beef broth. So, I ordered a regular bowl of Pho with rare beef...
The moment I tasted it, the broth really did not have much flavor. It tasted bland and like it was missing something. Well, considering that I was craving Pho and the service was good, I was just going to be quiet and eat my meal (I just wouldn't come back again). To make the Pho somewhat tasty, I had to put a bunch of the chili sauce, fish sauce and hoisin sauce that was on the table.
My dad, however, is not quite as accepting as me and wanted to return his... Never IN MY ENTIRE LIFE have I heard the load of bull that this server (or owner... not too sure) told us. He said, "You ordered it. You have to pay for it." Needless to say, my father did not stand for that and told them to take his Pho off the bill since it wasn't touched (to which they reluctantly complied).
In EVERY single restaurant I have EVER been to, if you ordered something and did not like it, they take it back, offer you something else and take it off the bill. Just because we did not like their Pho we were told to never come back.
First of all, that is NOT how you run a business. If a customer does not like something then you try to accommodate the situation, not make things worse. Just because of that, I would NEVER recommend this place. If you want a rich and mouth watering Pho soup, I would make the trip to Saigon Cuisine in Margate, Fl....
