McAlister's Deli — Restaurant in Lawrence

I am dropping my review down to 1 star after my experience last night (5/1/18). I ordered what I normally order from here which includes mashed potatoes and gravy as a side item. The sandwich was delivered hot and delicious. The mashed potatoes left a lot to be desired. They were cold, and not the kind of cold where they sat in the window while the sandwich was being made. They were cold as if they'd been in the refrigerator and had only slightly been warmed.

I took the mashed potatoes to the counter and told who I assume to be the manager that they were cold. She said she'd warm them up. Not replace them, just warm them up. So she nuked them for about 30 seconds and brings them back to me, the dish they were in was warm. I go back to the table and try them, still cold. Returning to the counter she asks if I want them warmed up again! I kindly said that I did not want them at all, and she offered another side. Not wanting to try another "hot" side for fear of the same situation, I settled for potato chips.

Finally, the straw that really breaks the camel's back for me with this location is that I was dining at 7:30. They had over half of the dining room closed off to clean, so we had to sit with loud college students whereas if the dining room weren't being cleaned as if the restaurant were closed (which their hours indicated is 10:00 PM) we could have sat across the room and not been bothered. Not impressed at all. First issue was that my sister and I wanted to order potatoes but were told they were out, no biggie we switched to something else. But the person after us in line knew the game because she was told the same thing and said “I’ll wait for one” and she got one in no time at all! So they were not out, they just didn’t want to make them? So PSA, if they say they’re out, just say “I’ll wait for more to be made” and you can have one. Also, I’m not sure if it’s the struggle to find people who want to work but one server in particular had a seriously rude attitude. She wasn’t even helping us but I noticed how rude and short she was with others she helped. Very clearly everyone was a major hassle to her. Management will know exactly who I’m talking about because one customer did complain about the servers attitude and the manager said “that’s just her face” and seemed pretty indifferent. I do think she just naturally has a scowl but this was an attitude issue, not a face issue. Final thing, my potato soup was awful. My husband hates to waste food and he didn’t want to finish it or take it home. The Italian sandwich was good. That was the only plus of the trip but not worth going back...

Probably skip this location...especially if you're used to going to other mccalisters that are good. We walking in at 12:40. Went specifically for a spud for my wife....they were already out. They were also out of mac and cheese...at least that's what we were told. But once we sat down and were waiting on our food, Mac and cheese was brought out to the table next to us. The chips I got were weird...stale, almost chewey...they were not past the expiration date tho, so I doubt it was the stores fault. Chicken salad was medicore, as well as the potato salad. I will say my roast beef with horseradish sauce was really good, and the tea is always top notch. All and all, with the price of a sandwich I just expect more. And being out of menu items that early in lunch is not a great business model. Store was pretty clean, and staff...
