My friend and I decided to stop by for a little 'brunch' on a Saturday morning. 2 people, no wait at 11.30 am. Parking was rough, but it was a cute little place, nice artwork on the wall, etc. Liz was our waitress and did a great job greeting us even though they were very busy and it looked like most tables were seated.
It is important to note that there is a chalk board on the back wall with 'specials' but since I did a little research first, we knew we wanted a Mimosa and the fried green tomatoes, so we didn't even LOOK at the board and my back was towards the board (facing the front door).
We order and we wait. Liz came to us and asked if we wanted 'large' mimosas and we agreed on the large. Now, the menu says mimosas are $3. I didn't ask how much the 'large' mimosa was, but figured it would be no more than $6 (my bad). I looked at the menu to confirm that the tomatoes were $8. So, I figured $16 for our meal, $12 for our mimosas.
The tomatoes were ok – a little hard, like not cooked long enough – but the flavor was good the breading was good and of course the topping of shrimp and crab was delicious. The mimosas were good as well – more champs than juice. During our meal, Liz came around with a pitcher of mimosas and asked if we wanted to be topped off. I specifically asked if ours were bottomless – and was told no. We weren't staying for bottomless, so I wanted to confirm and was pleased she wanted to top it off! So we said yes.
All is well, and we finish our meal, and ask for the check. The check was delivered, and frankly I almost had a stroke! Our meal, before tip, was $55 and change!! FOR A LIGHT BRUNCH MEAL!
I call Liz over and ask for clarification. I explain that the menu said $8 – why are we being charged $32 for them? She points to the back wall and says the fried GREEN tomatoes were $16 each. Apparently the tomatoes on the menu were fried red tomatoes with the same topping? Never heard of fried RED tomatoes, so I was a little stumped. She also explained that the MENU PRICE WAS WRONG FOR THE MIMOSA AND THEY VERBALLY TELL THE PRICE CHANGE. Ah, no you didn't. I would have NEVER signed up for $14 A PIECE mimosas.
While the food and drinks were definitely acceptable, the price changes at the end were robbery. Can't go back – can't afford to go back. Be careful when ordering and be specific. Ask about pricing and be sure to look at the back board even if you are sure what you are ordering.
Train your staff to point out the board, especially if your patrons are sitting with their back to the board. White out or sharpie out the erroneous pricing on the menus. Feeling a lot...
Read moreMaybe they’re still having trouble sorting out how to deal with twice as much space. My wife and I absolutely loved this brunch spot back when it was in the old location. Granted, many times we rolled up and found the wait was too long for our taste. So we’d find something else. It’s League City. We can go to dozens of quality restaurants without waiting. I thought this bigger new location. Would fix that but maybe they’re too understaffed or…something. Today (just the two of us) waited about an hour outside in the sun. Watched three other groups of people leave before being seated. There didn’t seem like a lot of others waiting. Maybe an additional three groups. Finally we went in to check the time and they moved us to some seats. There were easily three other tables still open. Not sure why they weren’t using them. It took a long while (maybe 20 minutes) to get drinks. If it wasn’t for the young man walking around asking if people needed water (thank you young sir) we would’ve likely just left. I really wish we had. I just felt like we’d committed at that point. An hour and three minutes after our food arrived my wife was offered a second mimosa. Actually I had to ask for that. Our server really just didn’t seem to care at all. Maybe he was having a bad day. I hope it gets better if so. The food was alright. Looked incredible. But it didn’t taste hot and fresh…nothing as good as the last time (in the old location). The onion rings would have been magnificent if they were hot and fresh. I’m an onion ring guy. I Get them anywhere that serves them. These were the massive, flaky, batter-dipped beauties that would have just been to die for if they hadn’t been prepared probably 30+ minutes earlier. $62 and 2 hours 48 minutes later we were finally able to leave. Not at all happy about losing so much of our day for a very mediocre experience. My wife doesn’t get bent up about much of anything. I’m the impatient one. I like everything to be perfect. But even she was quite irritated by the experience. We both agreed we wouldn’t be going back. At least until we hear some very positive improvements. But still…it’s going to be some time. I do hope they figure it out. I’d like to see this place succeed since we liked the old one so much. I’ve removed my old (positive) review. It just didn’t seem appropriate since that was a different place altogether. I wouldn’t have left but one star if it wasn’t for the attentive young man that made sure our...
Read moreThis was our first time here, we showed up at about 6:30 on a Saturday but we were able to get the last spot in the corner. The first thing I noticed was the fairly uncomfortable heat inside. It took a while for a server to get to us, it looked like there were maybe two servers working the the whole restaurant which is small but I would say there were about 40 people there . The server was good when she was able to get to us and updated us a few times on the time it would take but we did wait a little more than an hour for the snapper and salmon adobe plates we ordered. Mine came with wilted garlic tossed spinach and I subbed the rice for corn risotto. We also got the seared scallops for appetizers , the scallops in my opinion were way over cooked with a rubbery texture but I will say the seasoning and sear tasted great along with a very classy presentation. My salmon also had a good sear on it with the right amount of salt and butter crust there but was also still a little overcooked. The risotto while I understand is supposed to be al dente was undercooked even to the point that it almost still had a crunch to it instead of just a slightly firm bite to it. My girlfriend mentioned this to the server and they brought another batch of the same risotto so not much help there. Her snapper and shrimp went off without a hitch however, the citrus and herbs came through well on the shrimp and melded well with the snapper and cherry tomatoes which gave it just the right amount of bright acidic pop towards the end of so many other great flavors. I don't know if main street bistro is normally this busy and / or were understaffed last night but I can't really say it was worth the wait or the heat. As far as wine and beer selection goes they were carrying mostly the better more available brands such as oyster bay and cupcake, the beer selection ranged from the usuals to some better IPA 's and blondes.
Overall the ingredients and presentation were very respectable but execution lacked a little and the wait time was just too unreasonable. I'd like to give it another shot when...
