We had an amazing Chinese New Year feast at Monkey King BBQ & Noodle in Overland Park. This Cantonese restaurant specializes in Chinese BBQ and traditional Cantonese cuisine, and we ordered twenty dishes to share family-style.
The BBQ platter was outstanding. The crispy pork belly had a perfect crunch, with tender, flavorful meat underneath. The roasted duck had crispy skin with juicy, succulent meat, and the char siu had just the right balance of sweetness and smokiness.
Their claypot dishes were some of the best weâve had. The braised eggplant with salted fish and minced chicken was packed with deep umami flavors. The braised pork knuckles in fermented bean curd sauce were incredibly tender and rich. The braised pork belly with taro was a standoutâthe taro soaked up all the flavors, giving it a smooth and creamy texture.
Since a whole fish wasnât available, we opted for the fish fillet in black bean sauce, which was a great substitute. The poached chicken with ginger scallion sauce was simple but delicious. We also enjoyed egg rolls, spicy beef tendon, homemade pork potstickers, mapo tofu, beef chow fun, stir-fried udon with shacha sauce, Yang Chow fried rice, and stir-fried gailan.
Despite the restaurant being very busy, the staff did their best to accommodate everyone. Prices were reasonable, portions were generous, and everything was delicious. If you're looking for authentic Cantonese food, Monkey King BBQ & Noodle is...
Read moreWe ordered five dishes for three people. We are super hungry. The food is great. The food portion is decent! My fav dish is Taro with pork belly. I didnât take any photos at an early stage as I was too hungry. The sauce of this dish is great and I really like the taro and the meat in this pot. It is a great dish to eat with rice. The meat is not too fat but the pork skin tastes great.
The roasted duck is also delicious! The skin is crispy and half duck is perfect for three people or maybe four.
Fermented Bean Cured Pork Knuckles Pot is okay. It is delicious when comparing with other restaurants but cannot beat home cooking. The pork knuckles are pretty soft
Beef chow fun: beef tastes great but I personally donât like the noodles. And the size is big, so I only ate a small part of it.
Spicy beef tendon: the one we really donât like. We expect tendon to be chewy but it is over-cooked, so it is very soft. Also, the sauce is a little bit weird, doesnât align to my...
Read moreHEADS UP IF VEGAN: this restaurant has a great atmosphere and everyone seems nice, but there was a mix up with my food and I received MEAT instead of tofu. They replaced it, but that chicken is going to waste and I had to eat a bite before I realized. So if you choose to give them a chance, please explain clearly what protein you want. Also, the side dishes have chicken or beef flavor, so make sure to ask for no chicken, beef, seafood etc broth or oyster sauce. I'm not sure they are very familiar with making vegan food since they clearly produce a lot of delicious looking, traditional meat-based food. For tea drinkers, be sure to ask for 2 or more tea bags, because they gave me 1 for a huge pot and it was basically water. I will probably avoid this place in the future which is a shame because it's so close to my family's house! I remember going to the Ho family's market here years ago and I'm glad someone is...
