Cafeteria Food! Never again. We went to Kindle in Lewes on Bank street. It was Tuesday and our our other favorite Restaurant, Lewes Oyster House, was closed for the week. We decided to try something new instead of our usual Bramble and Brine or Harvest Tide. We settled on Kindle. As a 30 year resident of Lewes, I never heard anyone 'rave' about Kindle like they do Oyster House and Bramble and Harvest tide. Menu was not as described at all! Description on the Menu makes it sound delicious. It was bland. I had a flavorless piece of well cooked dry salmon over pearl pastsa that had some goat cheese on it for $28. Almost like mac n cheese with pearl pasta and a few dots of tomato puree around the plate and about 2 mushroom slices. There were no leeks at all. Where is the chef? The description says, 'American flair with a bit of French influence'? Obviously this chef has never been to France. Is there a chef? There must be a short order cook in the kitchen. Tasted like cafeteria food. Honestly those boxed, home delivered meals Like Blue Apron and Sun Basket that you cook yourself are 1000% better. Wines were $14- $15 per glass, very sugary, not dry, even though I asked for dry, and tasted like cranberry juice cocktail. Who is purchasing the wines? and at $14-15 a glass I expect something good, not ruby red, candy apple sweet juice. The vodka cocktail tasted like a mix of bottled cranberry juice and vodka and a squirt of lime? and was a murky color. 1 star for bread. Could not wait to get the check and get out of there. Never again. I went home and made a salad. $80 for a tasteless dinner. I edited this because after looking at the pictures from the other reviews I am wondering how the others gave a good review. The pictures look just as bad as the food tasted. There is definately no chef on staff, look at the photos, looks like cafeteria food, or buffet food, just slopped on a plate, and yes, it appeared that none of the staff were happy, but who would be with food and...
Read moreWe were in town for a few days and had our first meal at Kindle last night. The atmosphere is romantic and inviting, our table was lovely beside the window. We had the German Pilsner (which was ice cold) and a glass of Verdicchio, which was wonderful. We ordered the filet mignon and the pork chop entrees, all good so far...... Unfortunately it good stuff stopped there. My Husband said the pork chop was barely passable - chewy and too pink in the middle. His side was cold and weirdly spiced. My filet mignon was the princess cut, which was tasteless, overcooked and also chewy..... Then we come to the sauce the potatoes were served in! It was brown, thick and sticky, with wilted arugula sort of thrown on top of it. The flavor was indecipherable and bland. The potatoes were certainly not golden as described in the menu, they were brown all the way through, shriveled and not appetizing at all - were they microwaved? Yuk! If Ian Crandall the alleged chef/owner was there last night he should be ashamed of presenting this low level of food for human consumption! And, if he was absent then he should consider coming into work more often to watch over the food his staff is cooking/presenting/serving. We are from the city so yes, I can hear everyone reading this now saying ok, there you go, typical of out-of-towners, I bet they are from NYC!..... But hey listen, we have no problem paying city prices for good food, but when we are presented with overpriced sub par food, from a small parochial restaurant in the middle of nowhere, we were highly disappointed and a little miffed. We work hard for our money too. The experience was a 4/10 and that is being generous because of the atmosphere, the cold beer and the wonderful wine and great waiter. A MEH food experience, we definitely will NOT be back. This restaurant did not Kindle our interest nor...
Read moreA bit of a wait for the table and food..but definitely worth the wait !! Lamb shank, striploin, burger and this clam couscous dish was an absolute delight. Peach Cobbler and Lemon cake for desserts, equally impressive. A place I will re-visit everytime I am back in town ! Friendly waitor Aden also made it even more enjoyable. (2022) Update: August 2024
Full of anticipation and was ready to feast at one of the finest in Lewes...quite a letdown to be frank unfortunately. Lady who answered the phone wasn't quite friendly when we inquired about reservations, not offered, we are from out of town and so didn't know..Had to wait a bit but no issue at all, better restaurants always worth the wait..3 of us ordered the Thurs Fillet Special with my youngest ordered the Skillet steak. The special came with a glass of house wine (or better wine at an extra cost), my son wasn't old to drink but was initially refused to substitute with a soda by the waitress..she came back later and offered to substitute the wine with 2 sodas for my children..We all wanted medium rare but strangely, all 4 came with different temps..not way off but enough to make a diff. The fillets were bland without a nice sear, the sauce was just salty without much depth and even the garnishes were average...chewy asparagus didnt help. For desserts, ordered two Peach cobblers and as expected, way off from before..Highlight of the night was the mussels dish, nice broth and perfectly cooked. I don't believe it was the same chef as in 2022, some favorites such as lamb shank and clam couscous dish were off the menu.
We will consider giving it another shot when revisiting Lewes and hopefully Kindle will return to its former quality and attention...
