I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I went in there expecting more variety and what they mostly had was cheesecake. I was hoping for a traditional slice of cake but the woman at the counter said they do cheesecake. They really should call it a cheesecakery because to call it a bakery is a bit misleading. When I walked in I have to admit I was surprised because the place has a sort of a cool earthy vibe to it but while I was there a customer came in and asked if they had vegan products and she said no because she hadn't been able to master making vegan cheesecake and the ingredients were too expensive. The place needs more variety. I love a good snicker doodle and could have bought some of those. My wife and her sister each got a slice of cheesecake and I tried a bite of the bourbon cheesecake and it was just ok. I like my cheesecake a bit lighter and their cheesecake was dense like it was a slice of cheese. To their credit my wife and her sister both liked their slices very much. However, one thing I didn't like about the place it seems like it is one of those gentrifying businesses selling products too expensive for the average resident of the surrounding area to afford. I hope this business plans on being a part of the community that currently exists and not the one that they are hoping for...
Read moreOverall not bad, but it is pretty obvious they use the same base recipe for most of the cheesecakes and only change the toppings. The cheesecake wasn't bad, but I wished there was more variety in the cake itself. The nutella cheesecake tasted burnt or like it had coffee in it, which is completely not what I was hoping for. I tried the coconut flavor as well and it was literally plain cheesecake with coconut in the whipped cream dollop. I was really disappointed that the coconut flavor was so minuscule and there wasn't hardly any texture from the coconut either. The best one was the key lime as it had a very good flavor throughout the entire slice.
Inside the bakery was small, but clean and cozy. They have a little tea nook that was interesting and some couch seating despite their limited space. The area the bakery is in, however, is an area I probably wouldn't go at night. Even having gone during the middle of the day, the area seemed deserted. Plus side is there is ample free street parking, so getting in and...
Read moreAmazing cheesecake with an eclectic atmosphere, Backroads Bakery is a great place for a quiet first date. When it's good, it will blow your mind and is well worth the trek through downtown.
So why the 3* you ask? Truth be told, I'm just disappointed that on my last visit one of the slices I bought was very obviously old. And I don't mean baked yesterday old, I mean hard as a brick with the consistency of a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser old. I'm not usually one to complain or to leave a less than stellar review for such a great shop, but when you go out of your way to stop by for $8 slices of cheesecake the last thing you want to bite into when you get home is a dense slice of mildly sweet Play-dough.
The other slices I bought were perfect, delicious and creamy with delightfully...
