You have to try it! As soon as my daughter exited our car, she sniffed the air, mentioning, “This place smells delicious!” And it wasn’t just the aroma wafting through the parking lot: the food was delicious as well. Entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a bright and open space, adorned with thoughtfully placed wood accents, tasteful floral wallpaper, and an inviting area to both place our order and to glimpse into the heart of the operation: the stainless kitchen. We ordered the Kid’s Egg and Toast along with the polenta cakes, a smoothie, apple juice, and a dark rum brunch cocktail. (Given my enjoyment of chicken salad, I also asked if they would be kind enough to let me sample it on the side. They obliged.) Although the process of placing an order, then moving to a table, and then paying for the meal was different from what I have grown accustomed to when dining out—I appreciated this new approach, and the front-of-house team was helpful in detailing for me exactly what I was supposed to be doing. Okay, on to the food and drinks! We enjoyed all of it. The polenta cakes topped with beef short rib were exceptional, and the pieces of fresh thyme scattered across the top of the perfectly-cooked, sunny-side-up egg were just what was needed in the dish. Voraciously feasting on the focaccia bread, my daughter paused momentarily to rip off a piece, put it on my plate, and exclaim how I just needed to try it because it was the best bread she’s ever had—and it was delicious! (She also extolled the apple juice and the smoothie, although she did note that the latter could have been a bit colder.) My drink was exceptional, and I appreciated the use of Kraken dark rum, a rum I have not seen used in many other restaurants, particularly for brunch drinks. All that to say that there is much more to say about this new-kid-on-the-block restaurant that is destined to continue to make a positive mark on the Powell community and beyond. I look forward...
Read moreMeh… I suppose that if you are a housewife whose kids are at school, and whose husband is at work, you’d fit right in. But as the lone male sitting among dozens of chattering trophy wives gathered in large clucking groups celebrating their children’s return to school, this place is not for me; and truly fits the quintessential definition of a “Women’s Kaffeeklatsch.” This place is completely devoid of children and men (except me, clearly an interloper).
I ordered the breakfast burrito, which did arrive in a timely manner, but was neither warm, nor flavorful. Thankfully there is a condiments bar with both hot sauce and ketchup, otherwise, it would have been completely devoid of flavor. The ingredients did appear fresh, but the cook clearly spent more time arranging the garnish and strategically placing the char marks on the tortilla, than she did warming or seasoning its contents. It did however pair nicely with the glaring stares of superiority, disgust and judgement that were generously cast in my direction from the other patrons; who clearly viewed me as an unworthy intruder.
The cute, estrogen-rich atmosphere appears to be the primary appeal of this restaurant, as it is clearly not the food, the welcoming staff or the judgmental clientele. Im sure I won’t be back, but I’m also sure that my presence won’t be missed, as I am clearly not their...
Read moreWe had an unfortunate experience at the Locust Table tonight. Right off the bat it was chaotic when we were told to sit anywhere and a server would be with us. After several walked by our very noticable table (2 adults, 3 kids) we were finally able to get someone's attention after ten minutes. We were offered menus, but we noticed it might take awhile so we checked online and made our choices. The server took our order, I'm not sure it was ever written down, and left. We were mostly distracted with kids, but after 45 minutes we noticed some other tables that have arrived after us were starting to get their orders. We waited another 15 and then I went inside to inquire about our order. As we figured, it was never put in. No one was even sure who took our order. We were offered to have "something whipped up quick," but declined and left. The other thing added was that "everyone was new" and "the tables don't didn't have numbers on them."
I understand mistakes happen and I probably should have been more proactive with my asking, but the kicker of the entire experience is that not a single person in the hour after we ordered checked up at all. We were right next to the door to the patio so employee foot traffic was high. No one...
