Last fall, we stopped into the Littleton Diner, but were disappointed to find a CLOSED sign in the door due to staffing shortages. Since moving to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, I'd been eager to explore Littleton and give the renowned eatery a try and see what the hype was about. Last Friday, we were lucky to find the diner open, but not busy, for a late breakfast. Sitting down to a booth in front, I noticed a mix of tourists and locals -- typically a good sign. What I was really searching for as I scanned the menu, was that diner aroma, and though I strained my nostrils, I couldn't detect a hint of grease, spice, or goodness in the air. That was my first indication of something amiss at the Littleton Diner. On my side of the table, I went with a Yankee breakfast -- scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, hash-browned potatoes, and...(wait for it)...baked beans! I added the cheddar cheese topped apple pie to my breakfast for a few extra dollars, figuring it would be worth every penny based on the rave reviews. Across the table, a similar order, but with a single buttermilk pancake and an extra dollar for real maple syrup. The breakfasts arrived quickly and accurately. The highlight of both plates was the (locally made?) toast -- a hearty, crusty, and delicious raisin bread on one plate, and a fluffy toasted white that made me think of a grand-mother's kitchen. Seriously, I would have been happy and satisfied with plates of toast alone. Both eggs were prepared nicely and the bacon was cooked well. The let downs were by far, the hash-browned potatoes and the baked beans. I had been looking forward to the baked beans, but was disappointed by the lack of flavor, mealy texture, and cold crock pot. The potatoes were so overcooked, that they could have passed for mashed, and were as bland as a boiled spud sans seasoning. The pancake was rote buttermilk, oversized, and served with a thin light maple syrup. But what really spoiled the meal was the apple pie. It didn't even look appetizing when it arrived, with unmelted shreds of cheese blanketing a flat slice of grocery-store pie. This is NOT New England at it's best. This is exactly why so many people think cheddar cheese on apple pie is revolting -- because it's served poorly, out of a microwave with a sickeningly sweet, canned apple filling, and a flat crust. It only works with fresh, homemade pie, with tart apples, plenty of nutmeg, and none of that gooey sugar syrup filler. I'd expect at least a better pie from the likes of the Littleton Diner...and I'm still trying to figure out what the hype is about. (Aside: If you are visiting Littleton, and have a disability, beware this "friendly" little town, where handicap parking is a premium, and the spot across from the diner has a 20 minute time limit. Twenty minutes is sometimes enough time to get the wheelchair out, setup, settled, and moving before having to turn around and get it all back in the car. I'm still trying to figure out how 20 minutes on a handicap spot isn't discriminatory -- since NONE of the metered spots I saw had 20 minute limits.)

Remarkable as a nostalgic relic of a former time where basic home cooked meals are served for a guy at a counter or couples in a booth. The Littleton Dinner is a long-time fixture of the community. It seems very little has been added to the decor since 1940 when the current exterior was placed on it. The tight quarters and well-worn fixtures and formica surfaces create a very unpretentious and homey vibe. The service is prompt, and the food is satisfying. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder that was chocked full of clam pieces & potatoes. My wife ordered a Savory Veggie Panini, and I asked for the Senior's Fish and Chips (2 nice pieces of Haddock). Both of our orders came with a boat load of crispy fries!

Authentic and nostalgic 1930 Diner, right on the Main St. Original interior w wooden dinettes and a counter with stools. Larger open seating area in the rear. A vast array of breakfast, luncheon and dinner choices. There is really something for everyone. The Reuben Grill was generous. Flat cut corned beef was perfectly grilled on rye. Very tasty. Accompanied by a slice of pickle. The freshly cut deep-fried onion rings were the best. The best. The Monte Cristo w/ fries was OK. Nice, pleasant servers. The experience was a revisit to the past. No credit cards or debit cards accepted. There is an ATM on-site. Free on-street parking during the Xmas season. Free public parking just up the hill.

Worst food I have ever had. I am a Chef and hold a Managers Safeserve certification. I ordered a medium burger and was served a burger that was charred and about a min away from being a hockey puck, there was no flavor what so ever the bun was greasy and hard, the food was cold. My daughter had a Medium well kids burger and was served a cold hockey puck. My wife had the Big Cheese, which was just nasty and greasy and had bacon on it which was not in the description of the sandwich what if my wife had a pork allergy, there could be serious consequences to things like that. The food was barely warm, people that came in 10 mins after us got their food and finished it at least 10 mins before us. But the biggest issue is the ciabatta bread had mold on it which my wife realized after eating half of the sandwich and pointed it out to me at which time i told my family to stop eating we payed and left. About an hour after we left my wife started complaining about stomach aches cramping about 30 mins after we got home she then had diarrhea and vomiting and this food is the only thing she had all day. I think the kitchen staff needs training as to proper cooking temperatures as well as knowledge FIFO (first in first out) and understanding of Temperature danger zone the area in which bacteria multiplies and runs the risk of causing food...

The 3 of us had dinner here, we ate light, cup of soup, with half sandwich plus a side salad for only $1 more. I had a bowl of minestrone soup with two sodas. We doubled checked the cup of soup, half sandwich plus side salad for 10.99. The waitress confirmed the prices and the order.

The waitress elderly blue haired women gave me the bill. It had 2 cups of soups, the salad was priced at 3.99 instead of a dollar. She was or seemed very confused. She claimed. She didn’t know that it was on the menu? ( 15 Mins earlier she explained to us?) She adjust the bill and gave it back to Me, now the cup of soup, 1/2 sandwich and side salad were priced correctly , but she still charging for 2 cups of soups. When I approached her and said we only had one cup of soup, She SAID don’t yell at me? I never raised my voice. It must have been her defense mode after attempting to over charge us to get extra money. I paid and left no tip, very rude, couldn’t get the proper charges, but had plenty of time to chit chat with her girlfriend who sat right behind us.

Littleton Diner is a good place, I highly recommend not to let the elderly blue haired waitress serve you. Red flag...
