I am starting to wonder if you guys really trust my reviews. What does a skinny Asian know about barbecue? A wise man once said, "Never to trust a skinny food critic." Well you should go out and try these places and prove me wrong. We built our house in 2009 in Kyle right before my wife and I got married. We like living in the small quiet town but hate the drive back and forth to Austin. Traffic has gotten worse over the years. Kyle is limited on food choices. It is basically either fast food or Tex-Mex. There are three barbecue joints- Milt's Pit BBQ, Railroad Bar-B-Que, and Dickey's Barbecue Pit (dreading this visit). I feel like a sports columnist writing about the home team with the review of Milt's Pit BBQ. I will try to keep the sports metaphors to a minimum.
Milt's Pit BBQ used to be located on the access road of IH-35 but now has moved to Main St. They open at noon on Sundays which we did not know until we got there. We had to only wait 10 minutes or so. That is what we get for assuming they would be open earlier. When we went inside at noon, we had to wait a little bit while the kitchen staff got ready. So there is this thing called the Q Card. Some barbecue restaurants honor them as a discount card. You either get a percentage off or a free side/dessert. For whatever reason today, they rejected the card although they are listed as one of the affiliates.
My wife ordered a chopped beef sandwich and some green beans. They were out of buns this day which takes away from the sandwich. I ordered a meal fit for an offensive lineman as you can see below. I got moist brisket, pork ribs, and some jalapeño sausage, the hat trick of Texas BBQ. I think I got more brisket than I was supposed to because I only ordered a quarter of a pound. I got a side of macaroni and cheese, but they also gave us some ranch style beans. I always tackle the brisket first wherever I go. Typically it is a good indicator how the rest of the meal will go. The brisket was tender and smoky, but that was about it. It looked dry because they used an electric knife to cut it. There was not a lot of flavor. It reminded me of brisket you would find in ph. The sausage was decent. There was a nice snap to it with a good grit. The pork ribs knocked it out of the park. The ribs were tender and smoky. There was a sweet glaze that gave it a lot of character. I could probably eat a whole rack. The beans were more like barbecue beans than ranch style beans. It was sweet with bits of brisket. My wife did not like it, but I did. The macaroni and cheese was perfect. It was creamy and thick.
I was a little disappointed in this visit because I was hoping the brisket would be a slam dunk. However it was not. It looks like I will have to drive to Lockhart if I want excellent brisket without a wait. One of my favorite things to get at Milt's is the Haystack. It is like Frito pie with chopped beef instead, with bits of smoked sausage. It is a sure touchdown (I will leave out the metaphors next time). I would come back here if I need a quick barbecue fix that is within striking distance...
Read moreI Googled this BBQ Restaurant and sadly I wish I had chosen a completely different type of food. The emptiness should had me walking immediately back to my car. And as I walked inside there was no defined "Line" or where I was to stand in so to place my order. And when we "try" a new Restaurant we do not order a large qty so as to be careful with funds. This place OMG, had not offered any sample to convince me to dive right in with a good feeling that I had found a quote "a great choice" I will skip ahead and review the plates I purchased. The 2 & 3/4 slices of Brisket was sliced so thick that my husband had to cut it down so eating was not going to feel like a chore. And before pouring the bar b que sauce that came with the plate, we both tasted and immediately I knew that the over priced food was not Texas Bar BBQ!, nope this was NC style BBQ and it came to tasting the so called "sides" the "charro-beans" they were watery and the taste had us trying to guess what we picking up in flavor, the watery taste was just a bunch of indescribable seasonings. The 2nd side of potatoe salad was not what I wanted and could have purchased at any store.(Yuck!) Needless to spell it out, though I will, the reason upon my arrival and seeing the emptiness was a warning, externally that should had me heading away from "Milt's"! A good BBQ restaurant does not pull a small section of Brisket from a large obviously empty warming oven. So my prediction, this BBQ Restaurant will be gone in 6 months from now. Spend your...
Read moreCame in to try for the 1st time & I don’t think I will ever come back. The sides were cold and the meat was lukewarm. Order a two meat plate and they was stingy on the meat I been to other barbecue places order a two meat plate and theirs was worth the price. They only gave one slice of brisket for the two meat plate. Way to expensive for the amount of food you get. Definitely not worth it & after looking at other reviews them having cold food looks like it’s a continuous thing. When asked can I have more brisket was told that’s the amount that is given doing a two meat plate. And that they weigh it to make sure. Bill Miller gives more brisket than they do. And bill millers is like meh. The drinks was good though. I liked the green beans once they warmed them up. So was the mac & cheese. The energy was off too the staff didn’t really interact much etc for this one lady. And she was really nice. I suggest maybe putting on the menu the different prices for pounds, half pound 1/4th a pound etc. and maybe letting people know how much meat they would get per each plate. Because this definitely wasn’t 48 dollars worth and don’t let these pictures fool you like it did my family. We felt bamboozled and that it definitely was like a bait and switch. Unless y’all give certain people more food then other. We came in doing dinner time and it wasn’t to busy so it’s really no excuse for the food to be...
