I’m thrilled that this gem exists here in Lombard! After dining here a few times, I’m happy to say that the food is consistently delicious.
They don’t skimp on portion sizes, which is refreshing given the recent trend at other Asian restaurants that charge $20 for a pint of food with barely any chicken. The spicy ramen here is on par with the best spots in downtown Chicago, and the sushi and sashimi rolls are solid. The miso soup is also super tasty. It’s clear that whoever is in charge of the kitchen takes great pride in their work, and it shows in every dish. I can’t express enough how grateful I am to have such a great ramen spot right here in town—it’s that good. In my opinion, Kyo Ramen, Babcock’s, and Rosemary’s Jeans are currently the best restaurants in Lombard.
As a business owner, I understand how difficult it is these days to find reliable, hard-working staff who show up on time and take pride in their work. I imagine it’s challenging for them too, which sometimes results in slower service. However, I have no problem waiting when the food is this good. The server, Moses, has a great personality and excellent customer service skills. The bartender is also extremely hard-working and friendly. I think it would be helpful if he had an extra hand on busy nights to take drink orders at the window.
One suggestion: it might be beneficial to create two separate lines at the window—one for beer and another for cocktails. Cocktails take time, while beers can be served much faster. An express beer line could speed things up. You could even have someone outside with a credit card reader taking payments for beers, handing out tickets so customers can quickly grab their drink at the window and go.
I was sad when Lom Ling closed, but I’m glad it made room for this place, which is far better and more aligned with the higher standards of modern dining. The lady who co-owns the place (I regret not remembering her name) is incredibly kind and hardworking. Her fruit mojitos are a must-try! I hope they can maintain this level of quality for years to come and wish them the...
Read moreFantastic Japanese food served with a smile in a good location. The food was incredibly hot and fresh. There was a nice touch of elevation from the garnishes. Like the saphron strands on the curry ramen. Pricing was good especially if you come for happy hour. However, the restaurant feels like it's trying to be something it's not. Trying to cater to an audience that won't appreciate it anyways. Some menu items retain their romanji translation while other menu items are translated entirely to English in a culture washed sort of way that felt awkward and boring. The music made no sense for the atmosphere of the well designed dining room and was honestly terrible sounding. My wife and I have been to many East Asian countries including Japan on multiple occasions. The food was truly well spirited, flavorful, and beautifully crafted. But the restaurant itself seems to lack an identity. Catering to a demographic that it shouldn't feel the need to cater to. This is all to say the restaurant lacks the same soul that the food has. Hopefully Kyo Ramen can find a way to be confident in itself and its origins. We'll be back for the food...
Read moreCame for lunch in the middle of the week. Our initial server was nice, but was either new or getting ready to leave because she was very slow and inattentive. We were one of 5 tables in the restaurant, two of which were already finished with their meals. We started off with drinks and Crab Rangoon. It took almost 20 minutes for a milk tea, and the appetizer came a few minutes later. It took forever, but was really good. We both got the lunch special with two rolls and a ginger salad. I asked if I could get some cucumber in the salad instead of tomato, and the server said they didn't have cucumber to put in the salad. Meanwhile many of their rolls have cucumber in them. Whatever. It took another 30 minutes or so for the rest of our food to arrive, and then we never saw the server again. The food was really good, and another server randomly came and started taking care of us. She was very nice, helpful, and attentive. She, along with the food, are why we give this 4 stars instead of 3 or 2. We will be back to give the place another try and adjust the review...
