We came here for our 30th birthday. Me and my husband share a birthday and we were so excited to visit and take advantage of the late night .99 cent oysters. We got there and waited 10 minutes to be greeted which was fine we were early to our reservation anyways. We ordered a bottle of champagne and 24 oysters. The server asked if we were celebrating anything special and we said we were celebrating our 30th birthday! (Mine is may1st my husband's is May 6th) the server didn't seem the least bit excited or happy about our celebration. We brushed it off and waited for our oysters. The guy who brought the champagne asked us if we were celebrating and we told him the same thing and he also didn't seem too congratulating and didn't make conversation or talk about the pricey bottle of champagne we got. After we finished the oysters we got the prosciutto wrapped scalloped and the server asked if we wanted 4, 6, or 8. My husband said 6 but we weren't told it was a 20$ upcharge for the 2 scallops. Had we have known we would have just stuck with the 4 scallops. I feel like the server was trying to upsell us and hide the price of the upsell. I asked for a glass of champagne once we finished the first bottle and it was flat and didn't taste right. I tried telling the server but I didn't see him for another 10 minutes until our food came out and he wasn't at the table for more than 2 seconds I couldn't tell him the Champagne sitting at the end of the table wasn't good and I just couldn't drink it. Once we finished our food he stopped by again and I asked for a different drink (I got a espresso martini) but he ran off before I could explain the champagne was flat and not really great for a 15$ glass of bubbles. Once he dropped off the espresso martini he dropped off the check and it honestly felt like we were being rushed out. I thought that since we came for our birthday ( I was also very excited since it was our first time at this location) and mentioned we were celebrating we might have also gotten a birthday dessert or maybe just had a little better service. Instead it felt very rushed, insincere, and like the server just wanted to upsale us and didn't mention the upgraded price for more scallops and for Brussels. I wanted to love this place so so so very much. But unfortunately it fell short for me and my husband, even after the 300$ tab we left sadly wanting more, maybe even better service, more excited about the place we just spent our 30th...
Read moreAfter being seated in the bar area it took 15 minutes of being passed by many wait staff to finally be given a water and then asked if I’d like a drink. I asked to get a Herradura Anejo margarita (because I love the woody taste) on the rocks no Salt. Upon arrival I was presented with a Herradura Ultra Anejo neat. Not sure where in translation that got lost, but the server took it back and the bartender dumped it in a tall glass and filled with fresh lime juice. Not quite a fan of the filtered Ultra over the choice of the Anejo I requested still sitting on the shelf. Strike 1. Next up the Chowder that was quoted as being “New England Nostalgic” being from Boston I gave it a try. First taste it wasn’t bad but it was a bit thin and not creamy like I would get back home on Nantucket. Despite reasonably good taste I struggled with all the sand in my teeth. Not sure if it was from the chowder or the clam fritters that accompanied the chowder that I tore into piece and put in my Chowder. Strike 2 On to the main course Fried George’s Bank surf clams. I was looking for whole belly and when I asked the server she was unsure and said, “they are tiny strips”. So I asked for another minute to make a different choice. As she came back I asked if she could just double check if they were strips or whole belly. Low and behold she comes back and they are whole belly, so I ordered them. They come to the table and they are strips (bummer). Strike 3
Strike 4 comes when the check has my one Double Margarita costing $47.00 are you kidding me!!! Come to find out from the Manager Sharon (who was very gracious) the difference between Ultra and Reposado is only $2.00. Considering retail for Ultra $54.99 and Reposado $37.49 their liquor profits are quite high. Being in the industry it saddens me to see this highway robbery when you short term financial gains are great but the sticker shock for you patrons will make them a one time visitor.
I had such high hopes for this restaurant as a Landlocked New Englander I wanted a taste of home. While the flavors were OK the disappointment and the the pricing will keep me searching for a...
Read moreVery very delicious place! I absolutely love octopus (maybe an asian thing??) and have tried it in many places all over Denver. At Blue Island, the Spanish octopus dish is very close to the Spanish octopus served at Humboldt Kitchen! Both had chorizo and potatoes but seasoned slightly differently. I give the edge to Humboldt though because I personally love how Humboldt serves it - as one giant tentacle and the seasoning had more of a salty and spicy flavor. Blue Island serves the octopus in slices. Still absolutely delicious. Our server was amazing (I didn't catch his name). I also had the simply fish dish with blacked with garlic butter ahi tuna with red pepper chimucherri and potato's + salad. It was SO GOOD. I tried some of my husband's fries from his fish and chips and they were PERFECTLY SEASONED and salted!! The breading on the fish was also different but delicious - it had a slight sweet flavor to it. Maybe crystallized sugar on it? It wasn't overpowering at all. Best fish and chips I've had in the Denver metro area. The fried calamari (also stolen from my husband) was also so so delicious!! I also had my first oyster here (yeah yeah Asian girl never tried an oyster!!)! Had it with the bloody Mary shooter and it was delicious!!! Great place to take an oyster virgin 😂 I will be returning here!! Great place for seafood for sure! I definitely want to try their calm chowder and more oysters next time! I didn't finish the octopus so I could save room for the ahi tuna. Didn't finish the ahi tuna either and left super full!
Update 9/16/24 - Still an excellent place to visit! They offer a Power Lunch! I have since tried their clam chowder and it is excellent!
Update 5/28/25 - We still love coming here! Stopped by for Denver Restaurant week and this past week to discover happy hour pricing on Sundays for Sunday Funday!! What a treat! Absolutely love their chowder. Tristan was our latest waiter and he was excellent fun, friendly, and made us feel...
