We found this resturant from Google Mapsduring our trip to Astoria so stopby and give it a try as it had a good reviews. We were there on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn’t busy. There are plenty of parking around. The interior is nicely decorated, and the awards displayed on the wall gave a promising first impression. Service started off well with drinks brought out right away, but we waited about 15 minutes before placing our order, and the food took another 25 minutes to come out. I noticed just a chef and 1-2 servers, so be prepare for some delay. We ordered the halibut and chips, along with a clam dish in red sauce. The halibut was decent, though not as fresh as what we’ve had in Long Beach. The fries weren’t fresh. The clams were small, and the red sauce—made with celery, tomatoes, and julienned carrots—was an unusual combination to me. The overall flavor was just okay for me.

If you want a place that cooks fish right, this is the place. We went for lunch and ordered fish and chips with a side of clam chowder. We were greeted as we walked in and seated immediately. The restaurant is clean and fishing village themed. I did find it interesting that blues music was playing. Our drinks were delivered and food ordered quickly. The clam chowder arrived shortly and saw that it was thick with plenty of clams, bacon and potatoes... Good tasting too. The fish and chips arrived shortly after and looked good. The cod was light, crispy and tasty. The fries were home fries that were cooked correctly (even though I prefer crispy fries). The coleslaw was bland. Pricing is fair for this tasty meal.

A taste for fish led us here. We've been here before. It's good. I had the medium cod fish & chips. It comes with 3 pieces of fish, fries and coleslaw. The fries could've been a bit more crispy. The coleslaw always needs more dressing in it. The fish was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The tartar sauce was just right, piquant as it should be. She had the large Caesar salad and steamer clams from the appetizer menu. She enjoyed the Caesar salad. The clams were done perfect and she ate them all including the sauce left in the bowl. I had lemonade and she had the Citrus Mistress beer. Both good.

The calimari is fantastic here. Best I've ever had anywhere. I love to go here for calimari. The fries are thick and I like that, but they're to salty for me, even though I ask for unsalted fries. The unbreaded fish is excellent. The breaded fish is to salty for me. The clam chowder is excellent, but to salty for me. The desserts are excellent.

However, the fish is overpriced (IMO) because I can get as good, or better, fish for much less money at several other places. The desserts are overpriced (IMO) because I can get as good desserts elsewhere for less money. The calimari is a good price and is my reason for going to Freds.

If you like calimari, then you have try the calamari at Freds because it's by far the best I've ever had. I always ask for it well done and a little crispy (so it's not rubbery).

The ambiance at Freds is OK, but at these prices you'd expect more. It would be an OK place to bring a date, but for the signifigant money, there's other places with better ambiance and equal or better food. But if you want calimari, only Freds will do.

P.S. - the seating is miserably uncomfortable, which detracts from the ambiance and dining experience. Now that I remembered this detail, I almost feel like giving 3 stars, but I won't do that because I don't like negative reviews because I don't want to hurt local businesses, but PLEASE get better chairs with...

Update. 3 years later. Took my family here for mothers day and had probably the worst service I ever got at any restaurant. They weren't insanely busy but they couldn't handle the little bit of extra people. There needs to be some hospitality training here. The staff was grumpy and seemed like they didn't want to be there. It took over 30 minutes to even get water and over an hour and a half to get the food. The server kept forgetting about us. After reminding them twice they still forgot the drinks for my two boys. The mozzarella sticks say 8 on the menu but only got six. The server said it's cause they have new mozzarella sticks and that they are bigger. The sad part is we love this restaurant it's an hour drive for us so we feel really let down right now.

I never really give 5 stars unless it is truly deserved. And by golly the food at this establishment was well worth 5 stars talk about some of the best food I have ever eaten! I had the albacore tuna melt and it was so good. Best mozzarella sticks I have ever had as well as calamari for my fiance. She also had the seafood linguini. Ya the prices are a bit high but its because of how much seafood you are actually getting is a lot. Most places just put a few pieces of seafood here or there but this place makes sure you can taste it in every bite 😋 also great kids menu with awesome pricing and...

Food was good but service was pretty terrible! First we asked for straws with our drinks and the waitress said they were out. Then we saw the other waitress continue to bring out drinks WITH straws for the other patrons. (Not sure why she did not want to give us straws??) Husband ordered the fisherman's combo basket and I ordered the medium COD basket as from my experience halibut ends up being really dry compared to Cod. So I actually prefer Cod over halibut. Plus it's cheaper. Our orders came out... I told my husband "I'm pretty sure this is halibut. It's very dry compared to normal cod" It was still good though. And his plate had oysters on it which is not listed on the fishermans basket. I said l'm pretty sure that is the Seafood combo and not the fisherman's combo. (Difference being oysters on seafood combo) We got our bill and sure enough, we were charged for halibut fish n chips ($21 vs. $16) and the Seafood combo ($30 vs. $23) We told the waitress and she said she'd fix it. My husband gave his card. She claimed she fixed it yet she still charged us the original amount to his card. Hello!? Husband didn't feel like dealing with it so he paid the full amount and left her a small tip... SO just be aware! Overall the food was decent. And the tarter sauce was NOT sweet! So a...
