I had a subpar experience when coming here for breakfast with my family. We ordered some drinks, breakfast, and a pastry, after which the cashier gave me a number to put at our outdoor table, so I figured that the entire order would be brought out. The breakfast items were brought to the table, but we kept waiting for our drinks and pastry. When my wife finally went in to inquire, the person behind the counter curtly told her that they don't bring drinks to the table. Apparently, this also includes pastries (even though other food had been brought out), because the cinnamon roll I had ordered had been sitting on the counter for an unclear amount of time -- I had to ask them to heat it up again. When I told them we had been waiting outside for a while, and hadn't been informed about what we had to pick up at the counter and what would be brought out, the guy gave me a couple of reluctant "sorrys", but it didn't feel particularly genuine.
The egg and cheese breakfast sandwich I got was big, but pretty bland -- essentially a big cheese omelette on a brioche bun with some avocado. Wife and daughter got acai bowls, which they thought were pretty good. My iced mocha was decent. Everything was pretty pricey -- total was $70.
There's a lot of indoor and outdoor seating -- outdoor is very pleasant (but this was also part of the reason we had the service issue, since if were were indoors, I probably would've noticed our drinks and pastry on the counter earlier).
We won't be coming here again. It wasn't a good value, and service was poor. I would prefer other breakfast spots in...
Read moreUpdate: Cappucino Monday morning was great, and the croissant was more to my liking than Manresa, Midwife, or Maison Alyzee's (they have changed to all midwife baker, but other than the oft burnt almond croissants, the other Midwife croissants have improved on the burnt issue). Flaky, but not burnt, perfect layers, no burnt shortening odor, tasted fresh, no need to reheat. (Which is a plus, bc reheated croissants becomes greasy puddles)
(11 months ago) If you are feeling an avocado toast for brekkie or lunch, give Red Berry's protein rich version a try. You get a poached egg, beets, chickpeas, and ricotta, as well as an artfully sprinkled microgreen/edible flower mix.
You also get a choice of mixed fruit or salad. Being a lover of fruit, I always choose the mixed fruit, but it has been a 'mixed' bag.
I appreciate RB gives you grapes, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, instead of the more common and often maligned apples, grapes, and cantaloupe mix (which are often underripe or slimy).
The grapes were excellent today, crisp and sweet, but the blueberries, blackberries, strawberries were mushy and/or bruised.
If I had dined-in, the customer service is great, and I am sure RB would've replaced my mixed fruit upon request.
On a personal note, I like that the bread is toasted golden, as some places char it or leave it soft. I do prefer a leaner bread, but if you love rich brioche, sturdy challah slices, you will love RB's avo toast.
Good to know: The slice can be bigger or smaller, it's the luck...
Read moreIf coffee were God, Red Berry would be its church. I'm their devout worshiper either way: Red Berry was always there when I needed them. I literally attend mass every Sunday (sometimes Saturdays too) and leave feeling re-energized, uplifted and 'freed of personal demons' - no hysterical crying required. There may be some after-twitching involved - when I get both the cappuccino and the macchiato... And they're more tolerant than, say, the Temple of Sacramento, so you have no choice but to try several coffees and bring yourself closer to epiphany.
Allegories aside (some would say inappropriate :), I started coming to this place three months after they opened and haven't once been disappointed. I'm not adventurous when it comes to my drinks (always cappuccinos, cortados, macchiato or espresso) but I have ventured and tried cappuccinos all over Europe and the US and I can honestly say that after about two decades of caffeinated nomadism, I'm home, home at last!
The Red Berry vestals and priests are a great team too: they were always beyond reproach and have always guided me in the right direction. I humbly thank them - between loud, appreciative gulps - for their pristine and...
