I'm breaking all rules of reviewing decency and writing this review five years after my last visit - and I visited Casa Bianca about 12-15 times between 1996-2013.
AND - I'm an out-of-towner. Not an Angelino by any stretch. Closest was when I was a Seattleite in the late 90s - but even then, I was but a transient of four years...
Nonetheless, it's a point of pride that I visited Casa Bianca, a truly outstanding pizzeria. An oasis in a desert of pizzerias, frankly. Let's be honest - this time zone has contributed much towards the advancement of civilization, however - much like a drunken game of "telephone" - it has done a poor job of conveying the original message westward from its humble American origins at 53 1/2 Spring Street, NYC. (Yes, I know, Lombardi's has relo'd and changed hands since then - but only down to the corner of Spring and Mott's).
However, dear reader, I'm clearly compelled to share with you why Casa Bianca is the best pizzeria in this (Pacific) time zone. it boils down to four simple points:
I never ONCE went to Casa Bianca's and didn't need to wait for a table - whether it was a two-top or a six-top. Remember, this is in Eagle Rock, and it's attracting people from across the region - because of it being the best - so it's naturally busy.
It executes a perfect triumverate of pizza essence (to wit: dough / sauce / cheese) that culminates in a wonderfully balanced base.
It pushes unconventional boundaries while maintaining credibility and dignity. The fried eggplant and spicy homemade sausage pizza was divine - I hope/trust it's still on the menu.
It's old-school (i.e., cash-only (at least it was), red/white table clothes, no-nonsense.
If you're like me - and seek out the "must haves" of various areas you visit, then trust me that when I was in LA for business, I sought out this not-so-well-kept secret in Eagle Rock.
Again, please forgive this out-of-towner for such a belated review. But - check out my other pizzeria reviews on my "Pizza List" - I've got "Pizza Cred" - trust me on this one.
Casa Bianca's. Pacific Time Zone's best Pizza. (and, yes, Owners of Casa Bianca's - that's a freebie - you can quote me on this one - royalty free! (with proper accreditation, of...
Read moreMy family has been coming here for generations... We are Italian American and this is a classic spot! My uncle was friends with one of the current owners, they went to high school together 😊
They always have great service, wonderful work ethic and the food is consistent and on point. My favorite dish is always the pasta al forno... Ever since I first tried it, I was hooked! 3 kinds of pasta, baked with meat and cheese... Omg can it get any better?? NO! It's literally AMAZING, but not for the faint of heart lol One dinner serving can feed two people without a problem I'd say... It's a really good portion, and if I just get it for myself I'd say it would probably feed me for 3 meals.. (yes, seriously!) It's extremely hot when it is ready, so listen to them when they tell you to be careful because it's hot! (Even if it's to go because they package it properly so it will remain hot)
I also really love the caprese... Personally I like it without onions and I'll ask to add capers, even if it costs more, because it's the one dish I like capers on lol They also have delicious malts! 🤤🤤
Anyhow if you have not tried Casa Bianca, especially if you are a local, You Need To Try it NOW!!
Also, a couple tips... They only take cash but there is an ATM machine, parking is street parking, do NOT act rudely to the employees or you will have an issue (no one should EVER treat people in the service industry bad in my opinion anyway!!) Also if you come later in the evening, or even after 5pm, expect to wait... This place gets very busy! They are closed Mondays and I believe they are usually closed for 3 weeks in August (?) for their yearly break... Because they are family owned they understand the value of family time.
Tell Ned and Andrea hi from Sarah that orders the pasta al forno if you go in haha ☺️ If they're not sure who you mean say the Italian one with the tattoos 😎🤓
One more thing! Even though the pizza here is great, I love my pasta dish even more .. and you'll be missing out if you never try it.. but make sure you're ready for some real Italian comfort food... Don't expect to be served something you can have on a 1500 calorie a...
Read morePeople love this place. I find it inconvenient relative to the quality of pizza. I have had people try to take me there for my birthday, saying, "you gotta try this place." It never worked out. When we lived in Highland Park, I tried to get them to deliver, but they said we were out of their service area. I could get pizza delivered from further so I never understood it, but meh. Inconvenient.
I called in for a pickup yesterday. When I arrived I was told they only accept cash but they have an ATM. When I used said ATM, it said, "the owner of this ATM, Casa Bianca is charging you $1.50 to use this ATM." I recognize that little ATMs like this charge for the convenience, but it felt more like being fleeced.
I do get it. Credit card services charge for the convenience. They don't want to pay it so they pass the cost on to customers. The $3 (their $1.50 + my bank fee) I paid to get the cash to pay them is significantly larger than the % credit card companies would charge them. It's cool. I get it. It's just inconvenient. I don't happen to live in a cash based system. I rarely have cash.
I'm glad I tried it. It was really inconvenient to park and to pay. And the pie was ok. It was different, not to my taste, but okay. I'm glad I tried it. Now I don't have to go back. I have no don't there are countless reviewers who will defend the atmosphere and inconvenience as some throwback or something. Good on 'em. The business appears to be solvent so there must be something there that people like. I wish...
