Let me start off with the positive and the ONLY reason this location is getting a one. Simply put, the teas were excellent. HOWEVER, the service we received was the worst service for an eating establishment, I have ever received in Los Angeles. We were there (4 of us on Saturday June 22, 2019) after touring the museum. We walked in, basically not really knowing a lot about teas. And we were treated as if we were exactly that. They reluctantly said we could sit in the corner (not realizing there was outdoor sitting) as there was a very larger party in there as well. The server who finally came ran through the tea menu hurriedly and frankly acted as if he could not be bothered. When he finally came to take our order, I had ordered Jasmine pearls and my friend wanted that too. But he sharply said, "No, pick something else!" What?! My other friends picked a tea for which there were several choices of its form. But when my friend said one,the server bluntly told him that it was obvious he did not know what the difference between the choices were. He made no attempt to explain what the choices were. My friends ordered the coconut cake for dessert but the cake was inedible. It was dry and obviously sitting around a long time and they got this on HIS recommendation. When the teas arrived, no one asked us if we wanted milk, sugar, or honey. (I wanted and needed honey). No one asked how the teas were or the dessert. We had to ask for the check. No one even asked us anything. We paid and left. My friend left a small tip where as I would have left nothing. That server was rude, obvious, condescending, and a bully. If he was attempting to be funny, WE did not find it funny at all. We shall NEVER return to this location again. I do not know what kicks one gets in belittling people who may not have a full appreciation of teas but wanted to gain a good experience of one. His arrogance was only matched with...
Read moreWe went in to try their tea as it was our first time in the Hollywood area. I came with my family and some family friends to enjoy a new experience at the Chado tea room. The female staff member was accommodating initially and helped us settle in. We were waiting for more of our group to join us while we sat inside the tea room. When the rest of our group finally came into the tea room, The older Asian gentleman rushed out, extremely rude and unfriendly to turn them away. We had all driven almost an hour in LA traffic, only to be treated like scum. I can understand the staff saying that there might be a wait to get served etc, however he was unbelievably rude and condescending. The rest of our group ( my siblings who live in California) ended up politely leaving. I had my young kids with me and some friends and their teenagers present, who had actually suggested we try out the place. So I decided to finish their tea without making a fuss or creating an unpleasant atmosphere. Very poor customer service that leaves a lasting impression more than the tea itself. If I could give 0...
Read moreI like the location of this Chado Tea Room in what was formerly the adjacent Japanese American National Museum's gift shop/cafe.
I treated my former roommate to Afternoon Tea for Two using a coupon.
It included the Afternoon Tea Tier - a tower of goodies of sandwiches, scones and a slice of cake. I chose the Chado salad consisting of Mixed Baby Greens and Viniagrette with toast as my starter. The special dessert was the Maritius Tea Float - basically an ice cream float with tea instead of soda.
However, the food tasted mediocre and I cannot recommend, but the teas were high-grade and brewed perfectly.
A-ok for a serene and beautiful place to have a quality pot of tea in the heart of Little Tokyo; get your sweet tooth and savory fix elsewhere. I’ve also been to the Chado Tea Room in Hollywood and I’d say the ambience, service and tea brewing technique is better at this Little Tokyo location.
However, the quality of the loose leaf teas is very good — I regularly purchase various kinds of Chinese puerh teas from this store and brew...
