God, I miss Hara Sushi. As soon as I found out it was being rebranded as Drunken Fish, I had a bad feeling in my stomach, as we all know rebranding usually means "the same thing but worse." And sadly that was as true as ever.
First of all, the prices have doubled or more. What was once a perfect and rare mixture of affordable and mid-to-high end is now just expensive, and not even high end anymore.
But even that wasn't enough to keep us away after our first underwhelming experience under their new banner. We decided to give them one more shot... and dear God was our second time around infinitely worse than the first. In addition to the same high prices for mid-quality food, there was some fraternity doing pledges there at the main center table, screaming their stupid frat chants, doing shots together, and pounding on the tables. My wife and I couldn't even hear each other across the table. We cut our meal short and left early.
The staff did nothing, even after the third or fourth time of this happening. Our hint to stay away should have been when we realized that there were no other patrons other than the frat table. Apparently the staff didn't care that drunks had run the rest of their clientele off.
We won't be coming back. And trust me, when you see their prices and taste their food, you...
Read moreI thought we were ordering from Hara, but apparently they are under new ownership. Since I've never been there, I ordered Salmon, Yellowtail & Ankimo just to sample their sushi. I will admit I'm a sushi snob, but it's extremely difficult to go wrong with Salmon, in LA!!! The salmon was stringy & tough to bite through. The yellowtail was the same. The ankimo smelled old & the seaweed around it was also wilted and tough to chew. I'm so extremely disappointed and expected more...maybe because of their prices alone. I was so grossed out by the quality of the fish that I don't think I can ever give them another chance. Even at some cheaper and low end sushi spots, I don't think I've ever had such bad cuts of fish.
In addition, they told us they didn't have lunch specials when we ordered before 2pm. Not sure who ends their lunch specials before 2, but they also have their happy hour between 2-5, which is odd for anyone who works any kind of regular 9-5 job.
Their atmosphere is ok I guess, but their prices are high & they didn't even provide ginger or wasabi...

I really love coming here to have some sushi and Saporro. The prices are great and the sushi rolls I always get are delicious.
I've tried different rolls, but over time I only order two of my favorite ones to share. The Lighthouse Roll and the Wilshire Roll.
The Lighthouse Roll is yummy and unique. It has a citrus lime taste that I absolutely love!!! The Wilshire Roll is similar to a baby lobster roll at other restaurants. I like it because its good and filling. I highly recommend both of these if you are undecided. They will not let you down.
The beers are cheap. My favorite is a Saporro and it goes perfect with the sushi rolls.
I love that everyone always starts off with Miso soup and ends with complimentary green tea ice cream. I leave a happy customer every time.
Hara can get very loud at night with tons of customers coming in and out. Sometimes you'll have to wait to be seated but its worth it. I personally love the atmosphere and young faces. Customer service is...
