Read moreThe problem with Popeye's is that there are none in our neighborhood, which absolutely sucks, because I have rarely had fried chicken as tasty as theirs. Crispy on the outside, juicy, tender and exploding with flavor on the inside, cooked thoroughly so that it falls off the bone, yet isn't remotely dry. I'm a nut for thighs, so those were my pieces of choice. I was surprised by the size of the pieces; usually when you go to a fast food chicken restaurant, the pieces are tiny. While these thighs were hardly the gargantuan pieces you can cut up from a Foster Farms chicken bought in your local supermarket, they were good sized. Two satisfied me just fine, along with a bunch of those tasty Cajun fries. My wife had a leg and the mashed potatoes, over which she first drooled, then raved, so I guess they were good too, although in all honesty I didn't give them a try because frankly I find mashed potatoes about as exciting as watching lint gather in my belly button.
Next time I'm going to try the popcorn chicken, or maybe the shrimp (because my wife is mildly allergic to shrimp and would be less likely to eat much of my food), though I'll still have to get at least one thigh, too, because I'd have to fall onto the sharp end of a samurai sword if I went to Popeye's without having at least ONE piece of that fabulous chicken. I'm also very curious about the catfish po-boy sandwiches, which they don't serve all the time. I'm gaga for catfish, so I just know I'd be a slobbering moron for this sandwich.
What could make Popeye's even MORE appealing? How's two pieces of chicken for a buck sound to you? Every Tuesday they offer a thigh and drumstick for only 99 cents. If we had a Popeye's near us, we'd take advantage of this every week. Imagine: a satisfying main course for two that costs only $2! We can whip up our own side dishes for pennies, making this about the best dining deal in the city.
So, if any highfaluting muckety muck from Popeye's happens to read this, do me a favor and build a franchise in the Los Feliz/east Hollywood...
Read moreI was SO UPSET I came here 20 minutes prior to closing I had my evening perfectly planned out. I was headed to work and needed to grab a bite on the way because I had no eaten all day. I only had a few minutes on the way to work to gas up, get some chicken and hit the road. To my surprise, the staff had closed the door and wouldn't let me in after she had just let a NON black customer inside the lobby. Mind you, this was 15 minutes before it was time to close. I should have put a time stamp on the photo. There was a line of people still at the counter she was still taking orders. She could have let me in she just wanted to be. B**. She said "my supervisor Jose told me to close early" and when I pointed out that everyone inside was not colored but she closed the door on me while still assisting other people in the establishment. She argued with me and said "well I'm Filipino so what you're saying makes no sense" SERIOUSLY?! I'm not just trying to play the race card but it is what it is. Ok let's just call it a coincidence. I could see if the system was down or they were out of food but no ... not if they were still taking orders. I was so angry and humiliated because I had to go the entire evening without food and was so hungry at work thanks to her for closing the door 15 minutes before she was supposed to. Terrible experience. I put in a complaint online and they responded with a "Sorry about that. Here's 5% off your next...
