For years, I have passed by this joint but never ordered for I wasn’t really a fan of Japanese Ramen or sushi. Ramen of York is a small ramen restaurant that offer rice bowls, ramen, appetizers and beverages. It is located at the corner of York blvd and Ave 51 in Highland Park section of LA. Interior vibe was cool albeit less spacious and a little restricted. Furthermore, there are no interior windows where natural light can make any space look slightly larger and less confined than it actually is. It also seems to bring out a different, more lively look of the colors that appear on the various finishes on the surface of the furniture, walls and floors. Front outdoor seats are available. I arrived late afternoon to grab lunch and was politely greeted by a young female staff. I requested to be seated outside. I perused their menu and decided to order a Chicken Karaage rice bowl (served with rice, avocado, spicy aioli and green onions) and Sesame mochi balls. Chicken Karaage was super fried crispy, decently flavored and warm. However, the chicken taste like pork. I concatenated the pork like flavor with visual inspection, and concluded that it was pork. Blimey! I was flabbergasted. Sesame mochi balls were warm, sweet and soft. Anyway, I continued eating since I was famished. Staff were assiduous, amiable and followed health protocol. Service was mildly fast. Prices were reasonable for their food serving. Public parking lot and street metered parking are available. In this voluminous review, I enjoyed their service, staff and the Sesame balls dessert more than the Karaage rice bowl. I regret consuming their Chicken Karaage rice bowl for it gave me an upset stomach. Overall, I mildly recommend this Ramen joint and definitely reconsider going to...
Read moreRamen of York is a great introduction to the wonderful world of ramen and Japanese rice bowls. They offer a variety of ramen flavors to get you going. The York is surrounded by artsy establishments, vegetarian eateries and everything that screams hipsters.
The interior is long and deep. Not the most ideal location for large parties, but they will do their best to accommodate you! Their menu offers a variety of ramen options perfect for all of your dietary restrictions. Can't eat pork? No problem! You can go with the chicken broth option! Can't eat meat? Don't worry, they also have a vegetarian option!
I ordered tsukemen, because I enjoy the thicker noodles and find that the broth is usually more flavorful! I enjoyed the meal overall, the dipping broth was delicious and the pieces of chicken were juicy and tender! The presentation was a bit unorthodox, but I guess that is the hipster way. What really irked me was the way my noodles were chopped up into 2 to 4 inch sized pieces. Not that big a deal, but it definitely warped my experience enough to mention it. It was definitely quite odd.
The chicken ramen had normal sized noodles that were healthy and long. The broth was flavorful enough, but if you are looking for that creamy consistency you would find in tonkotsu ramen, I would stick with the pork broth!
If you're in the area, craving ramen and too lazy to drive to Little Tokyo or the San Gabriel Valley. This spot will definitely get the job...
Read moreAfter visiting Universal Studios, we went to see our friend in LA and we had lunch here before we travel to OC. This little restaurant is quite nice, hiding on a busy street, there's only parking on the streets or a paid public parking in the back which was a little difficult to use credit card to pay but after many tries and we did it. It was a hot day and the AC in this restaurant was good enough for us to have a nice lunch. The service was extremely attentive and pleasant. There are quite a few Japanese dishes that we could enjoy. Especially Ramen of all types. It's a little salty for my taste but quite delicious. I had the spicy tuna rice bowl which is quite filling and tasty with salad. I finished the whole thing. We ordered some appetizers which came out quite amazing. Spicy tuna on crispy rice cake. Our friend ordered her favorite spicy tuna rolls which she finished all. My kids had the tonkatsu chicken and potbelly bowls that they really enjoyed all LOL. The desert was so good that we ordered 2. The prices are so inexpensive here, the food is great and the service is excellent. We will come here next time again when we're in...
