I don’t know what took me so long to visit Bob Baker Marionette Theatre! It has been on my la bucket list since I moved here over 12 years ago! Well I finally went and took my son and we had a blast!
First off, there’s literally nothing else like it, so it gets cred right off the bat. The performers were fantastic and the detailed work is pretty unbelievable. They were using all vintage marionettes, circa. 1963 and they still held up.
I was nervous about how my toddler would respond... would he be too loud? Would he not sit still? But this place is built for kids so it’s the perfect situation to expose children to theater! Also... after the show they bring you in another room where you get FREE Ice cream (and coffee for adults) and you can meet the performers!!! They totally know to make an incredible experience for kids and adult alike!
Be prepared to step back in time in a lot of ways... but that’s part of the charm. Remember to bring $5 cash for the next door parking lot. It’s trust system and you leave $5 in an envelope with your license plate number on it that goes in a locked box.
I can’t wait for their Halloween show and SO HAPPY...
Read moreI went to see the reading of The Night before Christmas by Danny Trejo here at the B.B.M Theater. It was truly wonderful and will make quite the memory. However, my family has lived in L.A since 1960 so my first trip to see the marionettes was probably in 1980. This show retains all the charm from its original days when Baker headed the theater. The marionettes have found a new home in a small historical theater in Highland park. The theater has a few rows of theater seats, some folding chairs and padded carpet at the front for an up close encounter with the marionettes. I would suggest buying tickets immediately since the seating is extremely limited. Don't wait on those special events. The show was about an hour running time total. As for parking you can find it in the surrounding neighborhood. There is also a pay lot for the L.A Dot nearby. It is about a 5 minute walk to the theater from there. Overall, Bob Baker's Marionettes has maintained its place in the world of entertainment because it is classic and unique. Highly recommended for the imaginative and...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I had the privilege of attending the Holiday on Strings show for my 25th birthday, and let me tell you, this place is truly fun for all ages.
Visiting the Bob Baker Marionette theater was like being on a play date in Andy’s room. As the show unfolds, a magical world of color and music comes to life around you. The puppets sing and dance jovially as they bounce around the theater, even taking time to interact with children in the audience throughout the show. The acts are thoroughly entertaining and sprinkled with humor throughout. I don’t think i stopped smiling from the moment i sat down until i fell asleep that night.
Aside from the quality of the product, the theater is conveniently located across from a playground and in a strip full of amazing food, interesting shops, and even an art gallery.
