We (party of 7) had an early dinner (6:15PM) on Friday 29 June. The place was nearly empty and the person who attended us was probably a manger or owner rather than a waitress. She was extremely helpful to my daughter suggesting where she could go buy gluten-free injera in the neighborhood and bring back for her meal. BUT she was inattentive to our order -- I had to ASK (after the food arrived) if she would take a drink order; she would do one thing (get appetizer order form a late arriving member of our party), then disappear until she served it. And, worst of all, I ordered the meat combination that does NOT include chicken, but the majority of the meat was indeed chicken. Plus we ordered a second meat dish that was entirely lamb and it never appeared as a separate item (it was probably one of the items added to our combo, but who knows?). I probably should have sent back the meat combo but we had waited a long time and were hungry, so I did not do so. The vegetarian combo was much better than the meat one (perhaps because I'm not a fan of chicken). All in all the food was adequate and tasy, but not the best, and the injera kept coming (she was good at that part of service) . I lament that Nyala (my favorite when in LA) has closed and I'll try another one of the many places on...
Read moreMy friend picked this place out because I have Celiac and the site mentioned their gluten free injera.
I let the waitress know at the top of the meal that I had a gluten allergy so I would be ordering my own entree instead of sharing a group order with my friends. She confirmed that they would substitute gluten free injera.
When my order came out, it had the gf injera on the side but was still served on top of regular injera. When I told the waitress I couldn't eat anything touching gluten food she seemed perplexed. I explained I needed a fresh order and it went back to the kitchen.
Well either they didn't give me a fresh order or something else in the dish contained gluten because I've have now been violently ill for the past hour. It really bummed me out because I tried to be communicative but the waitress seemed bothered to have to interact with us at all. And furthermore it is very frustrating for restaurants to offer things that are "gluten free" only to find out that things are cross contaminated like crazy in reality. No other allergy is treated with this flippancy.
Also, they charged my $9 extra on top of the listed price for the "gluten free" injera and that surcharge was nowhere...
Read moreIt’s been a winter of discontent for quarantined diners here in Los Angeles; discontent, too, for the once-bustling restaurants that shuttered for public health reasons. On my way to order take out from the overwrought Meals By Genet, I stumbled across Rosalind’s on the same busy street at the heart of Little Ethiopia. The small patio, bedecked in stringed lights and palm fronds, seemed an oasis in a pandemic desert. The staff welcomed us to a secluded table for two along one wall and quickly brought bottled water and a menu. The attentiveness and kindness of the waitstaff made dining at Rosalind’s feel like being welcomed into someone’s home. We ordered both the vegan and meat combos and were entirely delighted by the well-spiced and perfectly cooked beef tibs, fossolia (green beans) and mesir wat (red lentils). Cooled with a long swig of St. George’s beer, a mission for take out became a wonderful much-needed date night. Recommended for anyone looking to recharge on food for the...
