83 dollars for 2 adults and a kid. That was my bill plus tip for a pork quesadilla, fish tacos, a kids burrito, plus a thing of queso, no booze.
The pork in the quesadilla was dry and had hardly any cheese. The salad that came with it was inedible unripe avocado, unripe cherry tomatoes (how do you have unripe cherry tomatoes in August??) And sad undressed lettuce with a tiny sprinkle of cotija cheese. So I ate none of that, and with no beans or sour cream, that came to 19.99. The fish tacos, which were the best in the city since 2006 when I first came to this establishment, were subpar. They changed the menu to either fried or grilled, my wife got grilled. I tried a bite, it was drowned in a chipotle sauce, you couldn't taste the fish, and just overall meh. The black beans that came with it were rated as "fine" by my wife. My kid likes chicken and bean burritos. He ordered a burrito with only chicken and beans. The beans came on the side, and were a sad bowl of watery looking beans. The burrito was not a burrito wrap but a fajita wrap stuffed with chicken and this was over 10 dollars. Plus he asked for no cheese and they gave him cheese, which he said was cold by the time the food came out.
Plus even the 1 thing a Mexican restaurant has that's the best no matter what is chips and salsa. The salsa had too much cumin and the bowls for salsa were too small for dipping. The baskets for chips were metal bread baskets with a napkin to keep the chips from falling out. This worked as well as you would think, which was obnoxious as we ended up with chips all over the table.
Overall disappointed in not only the quality of the meal, but the outrageous prices. If I'm paying 20 dollars for a quesadilla, it better be tony the tiger great, this wasn't even good. Not what you want when your menu revamp includes price hikes of 40-80% on most of your items. This was a reliably good, reasonably priced restaurant that I was a patron at for nearly 20 years, and with this revamp it appears totally different and much worse.
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!
At 730 on the dot, on a Wednesday, a "band" began a live performance. I am using the word band in the broadest possible sense of the word, and I would not want my use of the word band to denigrate actual bands, who play music for willing patrons. In this case, I was an unwilling patron. So unwilling. You know the SNL skit with Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell, where Walken keeps telling Ferrell that he needs more cowbell? Imagine that but tambourine. More tambourine. We were in the booth that was physically the furthest away from the people playing instruments, and I felt like the person with the tambourine not only had no sense of what his fellow players were doing, but was playing the tambourine so very aggressively he could have been in the booth based on my sensory overload. The rest of the band was marginally better than the tambourine person, but not much. If my meal wasn't so overpriced and underwhelming I may have thought it a funny joke, or just a good story to tell later, but this was the final nail in the coffin. It was a Wednesday night at Sol Aztecas at 730 and they were bad even for that billing.
Sol Aztecas, you were awesome, but we have to break up. It is you,...
Read moreMy husband and I moved to Louisville over a week ago and have been trying restaurants in our neighborhood (Highlands) all week. Every restaurant has been wonderful, until tonight. As soon we were sat at our table, the rude waiter asked if he could get us something to drink. My husband looked around for a menu, and asked if we could have sometime to look at the cocktail list. The waiter rolled his eyes and in Spanish told another person working there (I’m fluent) “they need more time, they need more time,” annoyed that we had asked. When we ordered our drink, my husband asked if he could get a specific cocktail and the waiter said, “yeah okay, I know what that is.” I asked for the same and he again, rolled his eyes and stormed off. My husband and I just laughed it off. When the drinks came, I took a sip of what tasted like lemon salt water and gagged. He came over and asked “you okay?” “This is really salty,” I answered as I stared at the salt at the bottom of the glass that must have missed the rim. He left and came back with a bottle of soda to top off and dilute it. My glass was too full to dilute. The few times he came back he made no eye contact, ask “you okay?” and just stared at my full glass that sat at the end of the table as if trying to make a statement. Not once did he ask if I wanted something else or if he could take it off the bill. We ended up having to pay for the drinks and neither one of us drank it. Fine. The food was terrible with the exception of the beans and rice. The chips tasted like old cooking oil, and the pork tasted spoiled. My stomach can attest to that. The waiter abandoned us when it was time to pay, I had to get someone else to get us the check. He walked passed us several times before that and we sat there waiting for about 20 minutes with our plates pushed to the center and napkins atop the table. He finally came back to deliver the check and ended up messing up our bill. We just wanted to get out of there so we didn’t complain. So many wonderful Mexican/Mexican fusion restaurants in the area won’t...
Read moreBefore I get started, my friend and I went on a busy night, so that can be taken into account. We sat at the bar as we were refused seating at a booth due to just us being 2 people. The margarita I got was 14.99. I originally ordered a Margarita flight, and our server told us that they weren't doing flights, only for me to see 5 minutes later, two flights go to a table... my frozen margarita was very watery and not even mixed correctly. I sat right where they made the drinks and saw other servers use the blender. My server poured a lot of puree mix at the bottom of the cup and put the frozen pre-made mix on top. (Which would have been fine if half of it wasn't puree) They do not use gloves for anything, and the fruits that go in the drinks are put in with bare hands. When I finally saw our server again and told him I didn't like the drink he replied that is what I ordered and gave me a to go cup with ice and suggested that I would like it better with the ice. It took 20 minutes for the chips and salsa even though they were being served at tables around us. We only got to order due to the nice couple sitting next to us, and they paid for my flight. That is what saved our night. Overall, the atmosphere was nice and lively, and the food tasted okay. I ordered a Carne asada burrito. Also, yes, I still tipped whatever was recommended. (I wished I had gotten a better pic...
