I've debated for a while on writing this review. I love the Great Escape. I even have a friend or two that work there. Been going for years and in my mind there is no better comic shop in Louisville. However, I cannot not say anything any longer. I was in the store for the last sidewalk sale that was happening. An employee told another of a random dog getting hit on bardstown rd, which must happen at least once a day. And yes it's a sad thing. But an employee who heard of this got so upset, loud, and hysterical, he actually triggered a veterans PTSD, causing him to freak out. It might be one if this sort of thing only happened once, however this particular employee is always loud and abrasive. He's often rude and just doesn't seem like he wants to help customers at all. My friends and I have all had bad experiences with this one person. I don't know if he is the owner or just a regular guy. But enough is enough. He didn't even seem sorry about setting off the veteran, who fought and risked his life so this guy could act like a rude idiot to every other person. I've never said anything when I've had a bad incounter with this guy, because I love the store and most the staff so much it didn't matter to me. But this is way to far. This guy clearly should not be around customers of any kind, as he does not have the temperament for it. My friends, some of which are holds customers there, and I have decided we will not be back to the Great Escape again. We will not continue to give our money so a person can be as rude as possible to...
Read moreVisited The Great Escape for the first time while traveling. I made this stop while traveling cross country with my family.
The shop itself is a classic comic/record store. Their amount of material is impressive and the layout is good. However if you get more than 10 people in the store at once I can imagine issues. Their back issue stock was abundant but extremely chaotic. I went looking for AM Spider-Man and simply gave up looking after finding all the Spider-Man titles lumped together and out of order. I asked about this problem to an employee who shrugged his shoulders and blamed other customers. The back issues are mostly bagged only, no backing boards so look closely at the condition of the books you buy.
There were 5 employees behind the counter and no one offered any help or said a simple hello. This is customer service 101. Obviously, the staff are not interested in any extended sales but are content to have the regulars support the shop. This is quite a shame as I was prepared to spend if I could have found the items or talked to an interested person.
I write not to discourage people from visiting the store as I liked the store and it's variety, but hopefully the owner and staff realize any problems and...
Read moreI've been going to this store for at least 40 years. When I was a boy, my mother would occasionally take me out of school to drive the 90-mile trip to Louisville to go used book shopping. We would always hit up Twice Told Books and the Great Escape. What I loved back then about TGE was the extensive used paperback and RPG section. Sadly, those sections are tiny compared to the glory days of the 80s, but there is still a lot to love there. Used LPs and comic books are in abundance, and there is a decent assortment of vintage toys and action figures. The ambiance is rather hole-in-the-wall, but that is my preference over a more modern, streamlined experience. In a world of flash and glitz, The Great Escape remains an authentic comic shop; in fact, it is a bit of a time warp where, if you don't focus too hard, you can almost transport yourself back to a simpler time, an analog time free from the oversaturation of stimuli that typifies our...
