Pains me to leave a crap review, but I hope it grabs the right attention. This place has been a cherished Lubbock burger joint for a very long time. I have been going since 98. It has always been a real treat to go and usually pretty spot on. Husband and I took two of our friends that have never been Sunday at 6 not a single table in there but us which I thought was odd for Tommy's at dinner time. I saw the new management sign posted and wondered then we got our food and the wondered ended. I got the hamburger steak asked for extra onions paid for extra onions got no onions at all it was two frozen hamburger patties squished together but was seperating while I was trying to cut through that was a turn off. My friend got chicken strips looked like fish sticks they were kinda wierd had big chunks of mechanically seperated tough pieces in it. The two guys got jumbo burgers and both asked for LARGE fries and paid for larges the burgers were so sloppy made definitely not your typical Tommy's burger grilled greasy top toasty buns thoughtfully built. the very reason that made Tommy's great instead below average sloppy built non toasted over priced junk. But what really did this couples dinner night in is the fries both guys paid for larges and recieved I kid you not a toddler size fry you could literally count like 12 strips of fries and paid over 4 bucks for each. Neither of them wanted to take them back to get fixed so I went up and asked the guy at the counter to make them large fries he then explained to me that was the large and they are cutting back on food (yet still charged for a large) he said if he fixed them they would only add like two or 3 more fries. I was litterally mind blown. He kept trying to argue but I didnt want to argue at all I was actually embarrassed and I was very nice I said honey these are grown working men they are hungry we paid for extra just please make it right he grabbed the fries went to the back I went back to sit down and the cook I guess, I REALLY hope it wasn't the "new manager" brought them out and he was so angry and ugly. If looks could kill. It made the entire shitty experience even worse. Even the new girl at the counter was just so shocked. Me and my friend didn't eat our meals they were just gross. The guys ate thiers. But talk about embarrassing I was bragging how great Tommy's was all the way there How long they have been in business and couldn't believe they never been to a combative worker, overly skimpy fry portions, gross dinner plates with missing items. Never in a millions years since 1998 would I ever say I will never go to Tommy's until now😪 I really hope this reaches the right person despite our terrible experience I don't want to see the place close. It was dead at dinner and now I see why. I know inflation is kicking everyone in the tail including me!!! And we are all having to make cuts but I know potatoes even food service fries aren't going to break a business what will break a business is all of the above. I hope to see you guys still open next year. I really do. But for now we won't be back, 27 years Tommy's is how long we have been loyal customers and my friend's I'm sure they have already told everyone about the experience. I just hope it don't hurt the...
Read moreIf I could give a 0 I would. I have NEVER in my life experienced such rudeness. My fiancee and I drove through and ordered 2 super jumbos, 1 as a combo. The person who took our order did NOT repeat it back to us. Finally got our food and drove home. Upon sitting down to eat, we realize that 1) her burger was wrong (gave us a jumbo) and 2) my burger was made wrong. I call the first time and complain that we didnt receive what we ordered. The young man's comment was "I rung it up as a super jumbo combo and a jumbo burger." Well then, you sir need to listen more. So I hang up and go to open my burger to find lettuce and tomato on it. At this point I'm pissed. So I call back and ask for the manager. Talk about someone who has NO business being a manager, if she actually was one. I explained what happened and in the middle of me doing that, she interrupted me saying she knows who we are and what we ordered and that she was the one who dressed the burgers. And I reiterated that mine was made wrong, and that I didn't order vegetables on my burger. Then I stated again that our order waant taken correctly and I was informed that they are trained to repeat orders and that if we say its correct, then oh well. We did not get our order repeated back to us. That place used to be good with their customer service. Now its gone down hill. Their food, was mediocre at best. On what should have been my burger, there was uncooked bacon. What should have been my fiancees burger, it was dry and unflavorful. It's as if they don't care about anything. When I said we were already home, I was told by the mamager that we could return the burgers and get them remade. What part of we are already home don't you get. This place is not...
Read moreA Lubbock Legacy I’ll Always Be Grateful For
Farewell, to another Lubbock icon. Despite what some would think, Tommy’s wasn’t just a burger spot—it was part of a landscape for native Lubbockites. From childhood picnics at Buddy Holly Park to visits home from California and Colorado, Tommy’s was always a stop I made with love. I recall how, over four decades, my family and I would order many burgers and chicken strips for those picnics, and later sharing laughter and stories with my husband while he attended Tech every time we visited the restaurant. I told him about the Lubbock tornado’s loop at the nearby intersection, and how Tommy’s opened just eight years after that storm—a symbol of resilience and how Lubbock would continue on.
Our last visit was in January, and I’m so glad we went. Tommy’s stood strong as Lubbock changed around it, near that iconic corner of Marsha Sharp and University. Its closing feels personal, like saying goodbye to Sam Arnett Elementary, Joyland, my Aunt Mary Balderas (of Lubbock), and the small-town Lubbock I grew up with.
To the owner(s), employees and everyone who helped run that place over the decades, thank you for the memories, the meals, and the meaning. You’ll always be part...
