This was only my second visit to a Velvet Taco anywhere and omg I wasn’t disappointed. This location is literally across the street from the Texas Tech campus so I finally had the chance to visit this weekend. I was there around 5p on Saturday and it was empty, which was good for me because there was little to no wait. There maybe 3 other people there - I’m sure they get busy later with the college crowd, but this was perfect for me. Restaurant was clean and had lots of local references in the decor. I enjoyed the chicken tikka taco last time so ordered it again - still great, strong praise for consistency across locations! I tried the breaded cauliflower for the first time as it was marked as a fan favorite and now I know why! The cauliflower is nice and meaty, the breading is light, and the toppings just came together very nicely. I live banh mi sandwiches so was excited to try this monthly special taco, it didn’t really work for me. I would’ve liked it better had there been just a tad more sweetness to some element, preferably the pickled onions. The blue corn tortilla chips were crispy, fresh, and just a tad bit salty - so perfect and since I ordered to go, I got a huge bag of them! And the elote was perfectly balanced with cheese, mayo/hot sauce, and the corn was grilled and tasty. Staff was friendly, order was ready quickly, overall I’d rate this location higher than 5 stars if I...
Read moreThese are the best tacos I've ever had. My favorite is the Tikka chicken #3 and the Nashville hot chicken (not the tofu). If you grab chips grab the red coconut curry queso to complete the meal. Its filling enough that thats all I eat for the entire day and its delicious enough that I'm satiated.
The people here are always very friendly and courteous and they have great service. The place always looks packed because of the quality of the food but the line moves so quick you can order and receive it quickly.
I used to hit up torchys all the time before this, but honestly the quality of their tacos doesn't match up to velvet, except maybe their queso.
Torchys service i think has gone way downhill as well in recent years, with them cutting their artisan drinks and driving up prices. Im guessing its worse even moreso now because velvet kind of is dominating the market here for tacos. I waited an hour for a queso at torchys when no one was there a few months ago and got told to sit back down and wait when I asked about it. It apparently had just been sitting in the back the whole time. I stopped going back after that due to the subpar food anyways.
I've always talked to very courteous people and had great service at velvet in comparison.
Also check out the weekly tacos. Its a curse because some weeks its so delicious and its only there for that week, so grab it...
Read moreI am not one to review but after being embarrassed I felt obligated to. First time trying this place today with a friend and ordered the Kobe bacon burger. The cashier, woman of very few words says “its a medium is that alright” as a first timer I assumed that was the combo size and agreed that it was fine. after receiving my food I noticed the tacos were both very bloody and red on the inside and decided to bring it to the cashiers attention although I have never done that before. She proceeds to say “yeah it’s medium” after I finally realized what she meant instead of clarifying before I paid she then says “oh it finally clicked for you huh”. Which seemed very unnecessary but I continued to respond to her with respect by saying yes it just clicked and that I did not know it was cooked medium to which she responded “yeah I figured.” I was ABSOLUTELY shocked by this response the most. Although the meal was fixed, the embarrassment I felt and the unprofessionalism of this worker was uncalled for as well as making me feel inferior because I am a teenager, customer service should be the same...
