I hadn't been to The Masters since I was very young, and tonight I dined with my parents and my grandparents for both my grandparents' anniversary and my birthday. I arrived earlier and had a Guinness at the bar and looked over the menu. The menu is classic, traditional, and incredibly varied. They offer a vast selection of entrees, salads, sandwiches, seafood, and features. Most selections on the menu are classic dishes that have been served for decades in fine dining restaurants. This isn't a bad thing, so long as they're well-executed. Our table was upstairs and overlooked the entrance and the bar area. The service was relaxed, but prompt and attentive. We started with the calamari and the crab-stuffed mushrooms. Both were delicious. The calamari was served with both rings and tentacles, cocktail sauce, and a lemon wedge. Classic and well-executed. The mushrooms were also delicious and the portions for both were perfect for our table of five. My grandmother ordered the prime rib and was very pleased, my grandfather the filet. He was also very pleased. Both of my parents had the Steak Diane feature and even though they rarely put sauces on their steaks at home, they thought it was rich and ate as much as they could. I went with the Swordfish Piccata with a French Onion soup starter. The soup was a little more salty than I would have liked, but was still so pleasingly rich and delicious that the saltiness wasn't an issue. It left me wanting more, if I'm being honest. The swordfish was perfect. A thin steak, but perfectly seared and seasoned. It was served with lemon-butter sauce, capers, artichokes, tomatoes, and garlic. I enjoyed every single bite. At the end of our meal, our server (I regret not getting her name, because she really was fantastic and I wish I could thank her by name) brought out a complimentary slice of chocolate caramel ... cake? Brownie? I'm not sure what to call it, but it was warm, rich, gooey (in all the right ways) and really helped me finish my glass of red wine. Our night out here was fantastic, from the greeting at the host stand, to the warm good-byes as we left. Im giving a 4-star rating simply because I can't give a 4 and a half. The interior needs updating. The carpet is worn, the beautiful wood rails and walls are chipped, the furniture is dated, and the table settings are set for fine dining but the service is a little more casual. I say "Go for it, Masters!" Embrace fine dining, again. You've got a great menu loaded with the classics and you do it well. The Masters is a fixture in this community and I want it to last. As such, I mentioned waaaay back in the beginning that I hadn't been here since I was a child. I promise I'll be back. Thank you so much...
Read moreYou know, there are just some places you keep going back to, and for me, one of them is definitely The Masters Restaurant. I've actually been dining there on and off since the early 90s, and every time, it's just a wonderful experience. From the moment you walk in, that charming golf statue in the entryway always makes me smile, and the whole place just has such a nice, welcoming feel to it. We had such a lovely meal, I tell ya. We started with a fresh garden salad, and their French Onion Soup. My goodness, that is still perfectly delicious, wonderfully cheesy and so comforting. The warm bread rolls they bring to the table are always a little treat, too! For my main course, I went with the Broiled Atlantic Salmon, and it was cooked to perfection, incredibly flavorful. My partner had the Neapolitan flank steak with a big, fluffy baked potato, and she said, "I will get this again! It was very good," and it looked simply fantastic. We made sure to save room for a slice of their lemon Italian cake, and that was just perfect! And the service, bless their hearts, was top-notch, just like always. Our waitress was very attentive, very polite, and very courteous, always making sure that we were well taken care of. The manager even checks on everybody to see if they're doing okay and if they need anything, and that is such a wonderful touch. Everyone is so friendly and attentive. This truly is a neighborhood local long-standing favorite, and if you're ever looking for a reliable spot for a truly enjoyable meal, I can't recommend The Masters enough. I'll for sure be heading back there, no...
Read moreI have driven by here so many times and never bothered to stop in as I didn’t know what to expect. Cue tonight: I was leaving my nephews birthday party and had plans to go to a place in Royal Oak, but realized we stayed at my sisters too long and the other place was closing soon. I was set on getting crab legs and wanted to go somewhere with a nice atmosphere and not one of those random crab places that have popped up everywhere.
I found the menu for The Masters online and they had crab legs so we made the drive over and we were pleasantly surprised when we walked in. We were greeted & seated quickly. Our waitress was lovely and everything felt perfectly timed. The atmosphere was much more tastefully done than I was expecting - I was thinking “early-2000s Applebees, but golf”, however The Masters is more upscale than that. It’s the type of place where you could be dressed up or casual and feel comfortable.
Our food was delicious. I loved that the crab legs came with the melted butter with a tea light warming it. I always hate when the butter gets cold just sitting in a little cup at places like Red Lobster. They were perfectly cooked. My partner got the spinach salad, but ultimately we shared everything and left very satisfied. We ordered some tiramisu to go since we were too full to eat it then. I’ve had a few bites since getting home and it’s so good. Honorable mentions go out to the warm bread basket and the side of green beans I had; perfect accompaniments!
Check out The Masters if you’re looking for a great meal with...
