Baldwin Street Grille — Restaurant in Madison

Nice neighborhood bar/grill.

Food was decent. My extremely fussy daughter loved her BSG wrap w/ Honey Mustard sauce and the sweet potato fries. My husband enjoyed his chicken sandwich and onion rings. The onion rings were coated with an unusual paprika, maybe a little bit of cinnamon batter. They could’ve been more crispy. I had the Reuben with french fries. Was not the best Ruben I’ve ever had. It would’ve been better if it wasn’t burnt. I would suggest a thicker rye bread, it was a little messy to eat. The french fries were good. My daughter and I enjoyed the lemonade. My husband enjoyed the options of beer they had on tap.

Atmosphere: A small comfortable place for lunch. Consists of a handful of booths, tables and room at the bar. I believe you can slot gamble and there is a pool table. there was a movie playing on the screen. The around sound was excellent. The husband and daughter thought the volume was a little loud. Perhaps if there were more people in the establishment. It would not have been a negative. (there was just us at a table and three or four people at the bar.)

Bathroom: My daughter and I recommend that you don’t use the bathroom. I would have to say that it smelled worse than my great great grandparents double hole outhouse (the bane of old buildings ). On the positive side, it was as clean as they would be able to get that area clean and it was well...

We stopped here because we were going by it during the lunch hour. From the outside it does not look like much, even first impression on the inside is a little different with all the tables being mismatched. At first that might seem like a negative but did give this place some character. After sitting down for a few minutes it was clear that this place has a set of regulars that are well known by the staff. That is always a good sign, if locals will come to a place on a regular basis they must do something right.

One of the things they do right is have a great bartender/server. He was busy behind the bar and when he got over to our table apologized for the short wait which really was a short wait. He also talked about our menu choices which was helpful.

The food was nice standard bar food. My eye was drawn right a way to the Juicy Lucy. According to the travel channel this originated in Minnesota and actually has two bars up there that compete with which one is better. I was happy to know I could get a burger of similar style closer to home. For those that don't know a juicy lucy has the cheese in the middle of the burger. This resulted in a very good burger. The fries were not my favorite as they were just little pieces of fries but they were not terrible.

Overall this was a really good experience that was highlighted by great staff...

Dirty, dive, with out the charm

Place doesn't even have a food prep sink or a handwashing sink in kitchen... they just use one dishwasher sink for all the clean food, and to wash their hands... sure it's not food safe or up to city standards, but if you get a chance to look around you'll see not much about the place is clean or up to standard

The bathrooms are a joke, and good luck in winter ladies...they are freezing

Owner regularly brings in his dog to eat at the bar, which is cute, until he's left unattended and gets fed by randos, and then he vomits on the floor or bar top

Constant traffic in and out of the kitchen from people who don't work there... it's almost like they sell other things out of the kitchen

I wouldn't recommend this place after 12pm... gets a bit sketch

But who am I kidding... I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I cared about

I will recommend it to any loud violent drunks I meet, they seem to have the run...
