Porta Bella is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Madison, Wisconsin, and it has completely captivated my heart and taste buds. From the moment I stepped into this charming Italian restaurant, I knew I was in for a memorable dining experience. Porta Bella effortlessly combines traditional Italian flavors with warm hospitality, making it a true five-star gem in the heart of the city.
The ambiance at Porta Bella is inviting and intimate, setting the stage for a delightful evening. The soft lighting, rustic décor, and soothing Italian melodies create a cozy atmosphere that instantly transports you to the heart of Italy. As we settled into our seats, we were greeted with genuine smiles from the staff, which set the tone for the rest of the evening.
The menu at Porta Bella offers a tantalizing array of classic Italian dishes, each crafted with precision and love. To start our culinary journey, we opted for the Caprese Salad. The vibrant colors of ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and creamy mozzarella were complemented by a drizzle of rich balsamic glaze. It was the perfect harmony of flavors that awakened our appetites.
For the main course, we decided to indulge in two of their signature dishes - the Fettuccine Alfredo and the Osso Buco. The Fettuccine Alfredo was a creamy dream, with perfectly cooked pasta bathed in a velvety Parmesan sauce that left us yearning for more. The Osso Buco, a slow-cooked veal shank served with a gremolata topping, was tender and succulent, a true testament to the chef's expertise.
The wine list at Porta Bella is extensive and thoughtfully curated. The sommelier guided us through the selection, and we settled on a Chianti Classico that perfectly complemented our meal. The wine elevated the flavors of our dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.
One standout aspect of Porta Bella is their commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Each dish boasts the authentic taste of Italy, and you can genuinely taste the quality and care that goes into every bite. The flavors burst in your mouth, leaving you with a sense of pure satisfaction.
Porta Bella's desserts are equally impressive. We couldn't resist trying the Tiramisu and the Cannoli. The Tiramisu was a heavenly blend of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, creamy mascarpone, and a dusting of cocoa - a classic done to perfection. The Cannoli was a delightful surprise, with its crispy shell and sweet ricotta filling, transporting us straight to the streets of Sicily.
The service at Porta Bella is impeccable, and the staff's knowledge of the menu is commendable. They were attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that our dining experience was nothing short of flawless. Each dish was presented with elegance and care, adding to the overall allure of the evening.
The ambiance at Porta Bella is versatile, making it a perfect spot for a romantic date night, a family celebration, or a get-together with friends. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with the option to dine al fresco during the warmer months, adding a touch of charm to the experience.
In conclusion, Porta Bella is a true gem in the heart of Madison, Wisconsin. Read moreMy spouse and I have had wonderful experiences in the past and decided this would be a romantic spot to spend our valentine’s. We called ahead and they let us know reservations were unavailable but we decided we would try to get there and wait if the time was reasonable. The hostess, a feminine presenting person who wore a bright red cardigan and has shoulder length gray hair, told us a 30 minute wait (we arrived at 6:35 so they wrote us down for 7:05). We checked in with them at 7:15 because it was past the time and it appeared others who arrived after us were being served. We were told we were next. At 7:30 my spouse and I overheard someone who was at the bar after us say that they were next. So we approach the hostess once more to say we were told 30 minutes and now it’s been an hour and we’ve seen others being seated. They say that those other folks had reservations and they were experiencing other issues so things are delayed. “You’re next” - again. Within 5-10 more minutes we see not one but several people get seated ahead of us. My spouse and I tell ourselves we’ve had good service before so we must be mistaken that we are being treated unfairly, that somehow we are misunderstanding. Then, the people who were at the bar with us and we overheard had also been told next were being seated. That was the last straw for us. We exited the bar to leave and told the hostess to please remove our name from the list because we clearly were not next ( if we were ever even on the list) — and as we were leaving they had the audacity to say “But you are next!” We calmly explained this was surely not the case because we had been told that repeatedly and others were seated time and time again… It left my spouse feeling gaslit by the hostess and questioning if the hostess was racist (we are an interracial couple)…. we felt so unwanted and uncared for and like this person had been lying to us. We were dressed nicely and were polite to the hostess. We’ve always ben respectful in past visits as well. Our only complaint previously to tonight’s trainwreck was that they charge a high amount for credit/debit card payments and it’s a percentage of your order… this feels unreasonable since it’s not just a flat rate for whatever the fees are that they have for running the card. Anyway, we’ve never had such poor service before today but this hostess made us feel so unwanted, uncared for, and dehumanized that sadly we will not be returning to what previously was a favorite spot in Madison. I highly do not recommend going on valentines day and now I do not recommend...
Read moreI have been going to Porta Bella for approximately 30 years. Most of the dishes are still very good, however, their customer service is very lacking and it appears they just don't know how to handle a complaint, at all.
Both myself and my date ordered one of the specials. Beef and Mushrooms in a Gorgonzola sauce. The MEAT was very tough, and had an odd taste to it. Being very hungry I ate mine anyway, but my date refused to it eat, seriously questioning if there was something wrong with the meat.
When we complained to the waitress, rather than offering a replacement dish as you would expect and as we suggested, she said "I'll have to check with the manager". She arrived 15 to 20 minutes later, after the food was no stone cold, and said they just bought the beef yesterday and sliced it today, so they knew it was good. She then said she could offer us a free desert.
ANY normal restaurant, would offer say "I'm so sorry you don't like it, what can we get for you instead". A good restaurant might do more. Certainly you would expect the manager if not the chef to address the issue with you directly. Poor training and poor response, all the way around.
I had a similar issue a year or two ago, and remember then, too, an inappropriate response by the staff. Very disappointing, especially since I love the atmosphere, especially in the middle room.
One other thing. Beware of getting the Ceasar Salad as part of a meal. They use ICEBERG lettuce. THAT is NOT a Ceasar Salad. You get a real Ceasar only it you order it separately.
Hope someone in ownership or upper management reads this and makes some serious changes to their policies in handling complaints.
I did have them box up the dinner, the dinner my date never had, for my dog. He'll eat...
