What a surprise! This unassuming restaurant turned out to be a hidden jewel. I almost left as soon as I walked in, but thankfully I decided to stay. The food was fantastic; I even ordered a takeout after my eat-in meal. This place definitely reminded me of your typical popular hole-in-the-walls in China that are always crowded with locals in the morning with no tourists. Congee House's menu is limited but its cooking turns out to be quite authentic. If you do appreciate a truly down-to-earth Shandong taste and you do find something you like there then this is the place for you. Otherwise, you...
Read moreOne of the rare few Chinese places that does breakfast. The waiter was really helpful and the food was delicious. I had the tea egg, which was the perfect amount of soft with lots of flavor, and tofu pudding that was like a comfort-food version of hot & sour soup (does not come with spice however so try it with a little chili oil). Next time I come here - and there will be a next time - it'll be hard to resist ordering that again so I can try...
This spot seems to be going for some Chinese cafeteria breakfast classics, which really excited me, I love that they kept the same decor from their other restaurant. I think there is a huge loss on serving everything in to go cups. Atmosphere makes a huge difference in spots like these. If you're serving largely comfort foods that could be made at home, I think there's something important about making you enjoy being in the space. I would absolutely love this place to turn into a mainstay for the community to hang out and meet up with friends for a comforting tasty meal. Having real dishes instead of single use plastic (even if it's counter order and pickup service instead) would feel much nicer and make me come more. The spicy tofu was great, the pork and pickle baozi was good, the soy milk was fine but I hoped for warmer, I enjoyed the 8 treasure congee. I think cutting prices and serving sizes both would benefit the business style so people are encouraged to come more often even if they pay less each individual time. Also would love hot tea. I hope to see this place succeed and will keep my...
