Honey Honey Cafe confuses me. This entire summer their food has been tasting off. I’ve been a regular this summer and visited approximately 12 times in the past 3 months. It's been my go-to study spot for studying because it's the only cafe in the Malden area with free wifi, long hours, and decent seating space. However, I've been quite puzzled by the inconsistency in their food quality lately. When they initially opened a few years ago, the food was pretty good. Even earlier this spring, their food was still decent. It's just been this entire summer that their food has been inconsistent/tasting off. I've tried a variety of items from their menu, hoping to find something that hits the mark, but unfortunately, I've been consistently disappointed.
It seems like Honey Honey struggles with consistency in their food quality, so it's best not to set overly high expectations. Perhaps their extensive menu contributes to these issues. As a study space, it's worth noting that it tends to be pretty cold (in the summer) as they crank up the AC so definitely bring a jacket if you plan on staying for a few hours. Additionally, it can get crowded at peak times. If you're comfortable with some background noise, it can still serve as a decent study spot. What I do like about Honey Honey is that they have friendly staff. Although I now don't frequent the cafe as much as this summer, I still hope they can improve their food quality as they have the potential to be a better cafe.
Here's my recent experiences and ratings for some of the menu items I tried: Appetizers: Popcorn Chicken - 2/5 It used to be excellent in the past, but this summer it didn't meet my expectations. It seemed undercooked and lacked the crispiness I remember.
Fried Chicken Wing (4pc) - 2/5 Tasted great earlier this spring, but recently, it tasted off, with a strange sour note that made it unappetizing.
Takoyaki - 4/5 You really can't go wrong with takoyaki.
French Fries - 1/5 Unfortunately, these were overly salted. I had to rub off the excess salt to be able to finish them. I try my best not to waste food.
Lunch & Dinners: Shrimp Pork Wonton Soup - 2.5/5 Lacking in flavor.
Curry Pork Chop with Rice - 2.5/5 Sauce consistency seemed more runny than it should be.
Crispy Chicken Ramen - 2/5 The chicken had a sour taste, similar to the chicken wing. I'm unsure if it's a change in batter, a recipe tweak, or if it just wasn't prepared well. Either way, it just tasted funny.
Beef Brisket Noodle Soup - 3/5 I actually enjoyed this, although it leaned a bit on the sweeter side.
Stew Beef Udon - 2.5/5 The beef had a slightly off taste, as if it had been in the freezer for too long.
Drinks: Strawberry Smoothie - 5/5 This is the only item I would rate 5/5 on their menu. It's consistently good.
Volcanic Blast - 2/5 I've had mixed experiences with this. The first time I tried it, I enjoyed it, but the second time, it didn't taste or look as it should.
Amazing Lemon or Orange - 1/5 The flavor seemed off, a spoiled taste, almost like the orange had gone bad.
Passion Sunshine - 3/5 A bit too sweet.
Fresh Grapefruit Green Tea - 4/5 This was a refreshing choice and one of the better...
Read moreUsually go to this place for smoothies but decided to try an appetizer. I ordered the fish balls. I was displeased with the service and food. Usually I've never had a problem when I have ordered smoothies, but not only did I wait over 40mins for 5 pieces of fish, I observed other tables which ordered AFTER me getting served first. I respectfully went to the counter to remind them of my meal which seemed clear they forgot. When the ball's came out, they were not only luke warm as if they've been sitting for some time but the texture of the fish was displeasing. It was slimy and had a sponge like consistency. I respectfully asked if I could swap out for something different on the menu and was denied. Not only my time but money was wasted as well. I'm a bit disappointed because this was a place I liked going to...
Read moreService wise it’ll give it a 4 but this rating is strictly on the food quality and flavor.
Créeme burle does not taste one bit the way it should (was it sugar free ? Did someone forgot to ad something to the mix? Hope this batch was a mistake. ) Will suggest to go over your recipe and training staff to properly brown sugar with a torch, mine was incinerated.
French toast ! So good ! You made the perfect toast ! But again, where’s the flavor ? Texture wise you are there, a little honey or vanilla, cinnamon / sugar maybe ? they toppings are missing, cheese and strawberries, would’ve been nice to see the cheese somewhere. (some unasked for advice, Don’t charge $1.80 for extra syrup, you’ll make the money on repeated costumers instead, it was a joke to pay $3.80 for 2 spoons of caramel and 2...
