Location: Malibu Farm Pier Cafe
As a newcomer to the area, I was excited to try out Malibu Farm Pier Cafe, drawn in by the picturesque setting of Malibu and the allure of dining on the pier. However, my recent visit left much to be desired.
The restaurant's ambiance deserves praise, earning a solid 3-4 stars for its appealing setting. However, the initial excitement quickly dwindled as my girlfriend and I encountered several issues with the menu and service.
Upon being seated, we were immediately puzzled by the confusing menu layout. The "build your own tacos" section lacked clear instructions or options, leaving us uncertain about how to proceed. Additionally, the "stop light" tacos were mentioned without any explanation, adding to the menu's confusion. It turns out they were simply denoted by the color of the tortillas, a detail that seemed overly enthusiastic in its design.
Seeking guidance, I inquired about the lobster mac and cheese from our waitress, only to receive a surprising recommendation against it. Opting for her suggestion of fish tacos, I also ordered the coconut ceviche as an appetizer.
The coconut ceviche arrived with no accompanying small plates, a minor yet noticeable oversight. The chips served with the ceviche were unconventional but passable, offering a modern twist.
However, the wait for our main course was disappointingly long, taking approximately 45 minutes despite the restaurant's relatively empty Monday afternoon. This delay was particularly inconvenient as we had our newborn with us.
When the food finally arrived, the "build your own tacos" concept became clearer but fell short of expectations. For a hefty price tag of $42, the unassembled tacos felt underwhelming and overpriced. My girlfriend's quesadilla also failed to impress, lacking any standout qualities.
To add to the frustration, we had to repeatedly ask for a refill on lemonade, highlighting a service issue that should not be overlooked, especially considering the premium prices.
In conclusion, Malibu Farm Pier Cafe's appealing atmosphere is overshadowed by a confusing menu, slow service, and mediocre food quality. For a more satisfying dining experience, it might be worth exploring other...
Read moreClassic Californian cuisine right on the pier! Definitely on the pricier side so you can expect to pay a pretty penny to dine here. However, there is a good atmosphere, attention to presentation, and quality ingredients. It can get pretty busy since it's the only restaurant here aside from their cafe at the end of the pier (closes at sunset). Parking can get busy too and the lot next to it can get full in the late afternoon. Highly recommend making reservations for dinner and having a buffer of 30-45 minutes.
I started out with the Papaya Cocktail. It was pretty good, but could have been a wee bit stronger. It came with some lava sea salt, but almost wasn't there by the time I got it because of the condensation. So good, but not worth the price imo.
We also got a bottle of wine. We decided to try out the Coquelicot Carbonic Wine since we were intrigued by this "carbonic" term. It was okay, but not dry and almost "watered down" tasting. I would have rather just gotten a cabernet savignon instead. Better worth the money by getting a bottle to share tho!
For food, we started out with the Bu Beefy Nachos and the Vegan Coconut Ceviche. Both were great for sharing. The Coconut Ceviche was like a really good fruit salsa and was really tasty. Lots of varying elements that gave the sense of a ceviche. The Nachos were good as well and had a good amount of meat and cheese. Between the two, I thought the Vegan Coconut Ceviche was more exciting though since it was different.
For our main entree, we went with the special of the day which was the Lamb Special. Super tender and delish. We also got the Spaghetti Squash "Lasagna" and it was super cheesy and decadent. Both were good dishes, but I'd probably get their Half-Chicken Plate next time since that looked really good from other tables. All in all, a nice solid dinner tho.
Lastly, we had to try dessert and got the Grilled Chocolate Cake and Coconut Carrot Cake. I liked the Coconut Carrot Cake better since it was more moist compared to the Chocolate Cake. Both a good way to end a meal though.
Overall, just classic farm-to-table right on the pier. Service was pretty good for it being busy and we enjoyed the time...
