Sukhothai is probably my favorite Thai restaurant in northeastern Connecticut. This place is conveniently located in a streetside strip mall with (free, might I add) parking up and down the street. It's easy to locate and only a few minutes off of Rt 384.
The restaurant itself is quite beautifully decorated with orchids, chandeliers, and more to boot. It has a calm ambiance, while still offering easy conversation for the table. The windows overlook an open field area that is quite pretty at sunset, especially during the colder months of the year the sunset is more easily viewed from the restaurant.
The staff has always been friendly during my handful of visits to the place. They are informative about the menu if you are curious about any particular items or spiciness levels, and they calm around periodically to check in and offer water refills and whatnot.
In terms of food, this is definitely some of the better Thai food I've had in the US even though it is located in a relatively quiet place. The food is never too oily, it's full of lots of flavor, and the spiciness has never been too much to handle for me. The spice has mostly aided and complemented the dishes I've ordered very well. Any of the curries are great choices to try. This is one of the few Thai restaurants I've tried where the curry is so good, it is easy and delightful to just eat spoonfuls of it, even without the other ingredients or rice. Additionally, if you're looking for something sweet and refreshing to drink while eating some of the hotter dishes, I can't recommend their Thai Ice Coffee enough. It is without a doubt, the best I've ever had in the US. Sweet (but not overbearingly so), while cool and refreshing to sip.
I haven't visited any better Thai places in the Quiet Corner let alone Connecticut, so come and try...
Read moreExcellent Thai dinner! The food tasted great. All made in-house! Our experience dining in the restaurant was great too. We waited longer than usual to get some of our order, but after we overheard that they have only recently re-opened indoor dining and even cancelled their liquor license because of the pandemic, it's clear they are doing the very best they can. The owners / family are operating the entire operation themselves and the food tasted great. We shared the pint sized plate of 8 thai spring rolls and you could tell that it was their own recipe -- not purchased and reheated. We both had one of their curry dishes -- the Massaman curry was outstanding (highly recommend!) and they green curry was VERY good (also recommended). Although the Saturday night we came in to eat it was very busy, the wife was the only waitress and running back and forth to the kitchen -- with a smile on her face -- serving people. She was very pleasant and helpful. We were impressed that both owners are retirement aged and still working so hard, clearly a business they love. There was a customer that came in angry that she did not get her take-out order sooner (multiple people waiting and came in at the same time), but the family / owners treated her kindly and even gave her a discount for waiting. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and experience at this restaurant and would encourage everyone to...
Read moreI just finished driving 14 hours straight tonight, and I checked into a motel for the night. I was exhausted and starving and that’s when the convenience of ordering from a restaurant can be very helpful. I googled local food places. Sukothai restaurant came up and I took a look at their Yelp page. The food looked decent, so I ordered a few appetizers, one main dish and rice. I checked off on Uber Eats that I needed utensils because I was staying at a motel, and there were no utensils in the room. My first complaint is that they did not send utensils. Who delivers food to a motel and doesn’t put at least one plastic fork in the bag? The motel did not have any plastic utensils, so I had to eat the food with my hands. My second complaint is that the vegetables in my dish were completely raw. I mean like carrots, onions not even cooked a little bit. My eyes were actually watering because the onions were so raw. It was a curry dish and the vegetables are definitely supposed to be cooked. It comes down to absolute laziness. What a disappointing waste of $40. Put your money to better use and order from...
