So good I drive all the way from Dover to get an authentic gyro!
Edit as of 12/5/2024: Recently stopped by early afternoon on 12/3/24 to pickup gyros for my family. To say the least, it seems like the passion of the service and quality of the food has gone downhill. I've been going to Gyro Spot since the original owners opened it, but I'm not sure what is going on with the new ownership of the restaurant. I walked in and as I approached the counter I first noticed a young man working behind the counter chucking burnt fries out of the basket onto the floor, and there was lots of spilled food on the floor (shaved meat off the spit that probably fell, as well as the burnt fries and a pita) that just sat there the 15min it took while waiting for our food, and the place was not busy. Not sure how long all the food was on the floor before I got there. Only one other lady was eating in. It was not a good look especially for an open area that customers can directly see! Lack of care can also translate to lack of quality in the food.
Anyways, we got the food to go, the girl at the register seemed a little inattentive and later it appeared we were down 1 gyro on the order (although not charged extra at least). The fries were lacking the seasoning that makes them great, they seem like frozen fries not the hand-cut ones they used to have with the skin on, and seemed like there were wayyyy more fries in the gyro than normal (and I usually like the fries but this was way more). The chicken gyro tasted strongly of mayo which was really overpowering. The tomato and onion veggies were sparse.
Like I said, I've been a long-time patron and supporter of Gyro Spot for 12 years and would always stop by while in Manchester (and when they opened in Dover for a brief stint) whenever I had the chance. But this meal and experience was disappointing.
Please, take this as a critique, as I never want a place to fail, but you guys need to put the μεράκι (as plastered in big letters on the wall) back...
Read moreThe Gyro Spot is an awesome twist on a Greek classic. This is a great spot for filling your late night cravings or just grabbing a quick bite. You can order online and come in for pickup, which makes it super convenient. The only downside is parking on Elm, but that's not their fault, and it truly is worth the hassle.
The gyros are fantastic. Like if-I-had-a-ya-ya-they-would-be-this-good good. Despite my unfortunate lack of Greek ancestry, I do love and appreciate good Greek food.I've been known to be a bit of a Greek festival groupie, and the Gyro Spot has possibly the best gyros I've had apart from one epic experience at a street fair in NYC. I digress...back to the gyros. They are made with true meat-on-a-pit gyro filling. Both the lamb and pork are fantastic. Super flavorful, well seasoned, and juicy. They toppings are well balanced, and while I was surprised by the french fry addition, it kind of works. It certainly doesn't detract from the experience at any rate. I personally enjoy adding feta for a little extra salty goodness, but I will say that this does get a bit too salty at times. Also, the kopanisti (spicy feta spread) is delicious...you can add this to your gyro or order some on the side to dip fries (and fingers) in. My only disappointment here is the fries. They work well on the gyro, but they are kind of mushy and bland as a side. The feta fries are nothing more than a container of fries with crumpled feta on top. It's good, but hard to eat. You're better off with a plain fry with a side of kopanisti. The fries are worth it simply as a conduit for this stuff, but I do wish they were a bit crispier and maybe seasoned a bit more. Overall, though, you can't go wrong here, especially...
Read moreI’ve only eaten at this place a handful of times and it was always pretty decent.. but my experience today will def be my last.
Cashier was super friendly as she took my order (a chicken G-Spot Bowl), and while I waited for my order, I decided to use the bathroom. I’ve never actually eaten in here and had never seen much of the place, especially the back room/bathroom area. The smell that came from the back storage area (I assume) was horrific… like an array of things rotting. I went into the bathroom and was a little concerned with the cleanliness of the place and how that was going to be translated to the food service. Then there wasn’t soap in the bathroom, so I let an employee know and she says “oh we’re out”. Ummm.. it’s not hard to hit a convenience store for a bottle of hand soap. Yikes.
When I leave the bathroom, my food is ready and I walk up to see this very underwhelming portion of rice, chicken, tomatoes and onions with a sauce all over it. I look up at the menu board of the picture of what I ordered.. and there’s vegetables, hummus, greens, feta, etc in the photo. I was told that I have to special order that extra… and there was nothing listed that said that. Nothing was offered to fix the situation.. just the staff standing there kind of dumbfounded when I said something haha. The bowl was already $12 with basically nothing, so I can only imagine how much all the “extras” would be that were plainly advertised as part of the meal on their menu. I was already disgusted with the whole experience so I just grabbed the bowl and left.
Super disappointing.. def won’t be back, and I really hope I don’t get sick from...
