Disappointing Experience at Osaka – Maplewood, MN
Our visit to Osaka in Maplewood, MN, on February 13th was nothing short of frustrating. We had a reservation for 10 people at 6:30 PM and arrived early at 6:20, only to be directed to the bar while waiting for our table. Unfortunately, there was no bartender present, leaving us unable to order drinks.
We were finally seated at a Hibachi grill at 6:40 PM, but the delays continued. It took 15 minutes for a server to take our drink orders, another 10 minutes to receive them, and an additional 15 minutes before we could even place our food orders. Meanwhile, we watched as two other groups were seated after us and served by a Hibachi chef well before we were.
After waiting an exhausting 1 hour and 20 minutes, I asked to speak with a manager about the delays. A server assured me she would check, only to return and claim that the manager was too busy to speak with me. However, she apologized and said we would receive a discount for the poor service.
When our Hibachi chef finally arrived—nearly 20 minutes later—he was excellent, though two of our orders were incorrect. At the end of the meal, when the check arrived, there was no discount applied. Our server seemed unaware of the arrangement, and after some back-and-forth, I learned that there was no manager on duty at all that night. This meant that the original server had lied about speaking to one. Eventually, a minimal 10% discount was applied, but by that point, the damage had been done.
To top it off, the restroom was in unacceptable condition, adding to the overall disappointment.
If not for my niece’s birthday celebration, I would have left long before the food even arrived. Between the extreme wait times, dishonest staff, and lack of accountability, this was easily one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. I cannot recommend Osaka in Maplewood and hope management takes serious steps to improve their service.

Read moreMe and my daughter sat down for dinner, our waitress didn’t understand English so she couldn’t understand anything we were ordering. The waitress then had to go get another lady to translate what I was trying to order and that were just noodles. The woman walks alway I had to call her back because she never took my daughter order. After taking her order she forgot her soup, brings it back room temperature. Our food ended up coming, my daughter as any other young picture of food taker snapped a picture of her food and noticed hair in her noodles up under the noodles as she was mixing it up. We called over the waitress who didn’t understand what we were saying and tried explaining to her, she then calls the other lady and we had to explain now to a second person about the hair. They then brought my daughter her plate back and scooped the hairy noodles off the plate and brings back her meat and veggies which are now cold. . I called the lady back over to let her know that and then i requested for a manager to come. He came out already with an attitude and tell me as if I’m slow or something that they cook the food 1 by 1. I said sir I really just want new food and new plate her food had hair in it and she needs new hot food. He gets mad and tell us to leave. And yelled about it. I kept my cool because 1st I’m a representative of Christ and second I’m also a leader for my daughter. But what the MANAGER at Osaka’s in MAPLEWOOD will not do is yell at me like I’m a kid and make us leave because of the hair noodles In a dirty plate. I will definitely NOT ever eat or recommend eating here. This is why I stick and stay with Benihana better food and quality. Be...
Read moreTerrible Food and Unprofessional Owner After being a loyal customer of Osaka Maplewood for over 10 years, my experience on Friday, December 13th, was nothing short of humiliating. The hibachi chef served food that was completely inedible. Overcooked steak, undercooked chicken and shrimp, and hard, undercooked noodles. My family couldn’t eat any of it, and the quality was unacceptable.
When I asked to speak with the manager (he is also the owner), Michael, he not only dismissed our concerns but yelled at me in front of the entire restaurant. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, he cut me off, argued that “Our steak is the best in Minneapolis,” and refused to take responsibility for the poor food (the steak has definitely decreased in quality). When I pointed out that the food was untouched, he angrily shouted, “Fine, you don’t pay, just leave. Don’t come back!” His aggressive behavior caused a scene, and other tables were staring at us. It was beyond humiliating. Not once did he offer to make things right.
The separate party sitting at my table also expressed that the food was ill prepared, and communicated their concerns.
This kind of behavior from the owner of a restaurant is unacceptable. Osaka Maplewood has permanently lost my business, and I will make sure others know about this experience. A restaurant that treats its loyal customers with such disrespect and fails to deliver quality food does not deserve support. Avoid this place...
